AP Classes
AP classes aren’t just your regular old classes. “AP” stands for “Advanced Placement,” meaning these classes are extremely challenging compared to normal and even honors classes. The entire premise of this category of classes is to mimic the pace of an actual college learning experience so that brave students can have the opportunity to condition themselves to be well-prepared for the very near future. Additionally, AP classes offer students exams that give them a chance to earn college credit; proving to colleges that a retake of that class isn’t necessary. Although the AP curriculum is tough and definitely not for the light-hearted, this discomfort allows students to grow outside of what’s already expected in high school and expose themselves to a sort of awareness and familiarity with their upcoming transition to college.
However, the 2024-2025 school year gave these classes a twist. As hard as they already are normally, Furness decided to cut the time students had to prepare for the AP exams by half. What was originally expected to be a full academic year turned into a single semester of absolute panic. Students are now expected to learn the entire curriculum of these classes (well enough to ace the AP exam, mind you) in just 5 months. But why? Well, as bad as it seems, this was a calculated decision by our school’s authorities. Since our periods are abnormally long compared to other schools (90 minutes), we technically still have similar amounts of class time to learn the curriculum and prepare for the exam.
The second semester had recently just started, meaning students who were brave enough to join AP classes would be starting the semester off strong and rapidly. We wish all of you brave students good luck!
