By studying a wide variety of short stories, novel excerpts, autobiographical narratives, films, poetry, and spoken word poems, students will examine how writers of the various genres appeal to audiences of all different types. While this class will focus primarily on the writing aspect of student creations, it will give students the opportunity to share their work in writing, performance, and multimedia forms. Students will also explore ways to develop their own writing by modeling the techniques learned through close study of our favorites. They will learn how to evaluate peer work in a workshop setting, using a Socratic approach. In the same workshop setting, they will learn how to use classmates’ responses to their creative work to improve and develop it. Sharing and performing work for an authentic audience is a critical component of this class. Students will also produce the PGHS literary magazine.
