PROGRAMS/SUPPORTS

Spanish Immersion Multiple Pathways Program

Students learn Spanish, while learning the same grade level material as other PGCPS students.   Immersion Programs schools prepare students for bilingual, bi-literate, and bi-cultural.  Many of our graduates have earned the Maryland State Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma.

Community Referenced Instruction Program (CRI)

PGCPS provides specially designed instruction for students with significant cognitive disabilities who require specialized instruction based on alternate academic achievement standards and assessments. Within PGCPS, students with significant cognitive disabilities are educated in the Least Restrictive Environment, which may be a Community Referenced Instruction (CRI) Program.  Programs are located in a variety of comprehensive schools. Students participate in all core academic subjects ( English/Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science)and functional life skills that are embedded during their school day.  Students participate in community-based instruction both in their school building and in the community based on their specific needs. Teachers utilize an alternate curriculum framework aligned with essential elements that are linked to the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards for the student's grade.

 Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)

AVID is Advancement Via Individual Determination, a College and Career Readiness System for secondary students in grades 6 - 12. For additional information, please visit https://www.avid.org.  AVID is an academically challenging college readiness system that prepares students for success in college and life beyond. AVID trains educators to use proven teaching practices in order to prepare students for success in high school, college, and a career, especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education. The foundation for instruction in AVID is driven by the WICOR strategies. WICOR stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

PBIS is a broad range of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior. PBIS is the integration of valued outcomes, the science of human behavior validated procedures and systems change. PBIS addresses "best practices" and current research about the issues of prevention and early behavioral intervention in schools. This unique approach to changing behaviors in schools emphasizes prevention and capacity building at the school level with a focus on concrete activities and strategies to support safe, non-violent environments that optimize the potential for learning. The goal of PBIS is to create a positive school culture in which pro-social behaviors are explicitly taught and reinforced, and all adults respond to the occurrence of problem behaviors in a consistent manner.
