Golf Course Setup
The host professional, in collaboration with the Examiner and Course Superintendent, will need to ensure the golf course meets all requirements to validate the PAT, which includes:
Course Rating
Minimum USGA course rating of 68.0 for both men and women
Men’s Yardage
Men under the age of 50 will play from a minimum of 6,350 yards, and a maximum of 6,700 yards
Men ages 50 and over will play from 94% of the men under age 50 yardage and maintain the same target score
Women’s Yardage
Women under the age of 50 will play from a minimum of 5,400 yards, and a maximum of 5,700 yards
Women ages 50 and over will play from 94% of the women under age 50 yardage and maintain the same target score.
Marking the Course
All penalty areas, abnormal course conditions, out of bounds, and dropping zones must be appropriately marked.
Hole Locations
Hole locations should be on a generally flat area of the green in an equitable location for the PAT event.
Course Playability
The host professional and course superintendent should work together to ensure the greens, tees, and fairways are mowed and in excellent condition prior to play.
If the ball cannot be played as it lies due to the condition of the golf course, the PAT should be rescheduled, in rare cases preferred lies will be allowed, see appendix page 38.
Pre-Round Requirements
Create a scoreboard with each competitor’s name listed, and make the following documents available to each player
Starting Times
Hole location sheets
Competitor Compliance Form
PGA of America Local Rules and Terms of the Competition
Notice to Players (Local Rules Addendum)
Pace of Play Policy
Rules and Policies Governing the use of Automotive Transportation
Target Score (calculate, confirm with PAT Examiner, and post)
Approved golf ball and driver’s list
Create TWO scorecards for each competitor, including name, starting time, and round number.
Ensure the range is open at least one hour prior to the first tee time.
NOTE: Please contact the Section office if a range is not available.
Provide a registration table for the PAT Examiner’s use
Make sure the appropriate number of golf cars are available for players
Make locker room facilities and appropriate food and beverages available to players
During Play
During Play
Ensure sufficient staff is available to assist the PAT Examiner with monitoring pace of play
Make certain players have access to appropriate refreshments, and/or the ability to purchase food and non-alcoholic drinks
Be available to support PAT Examiner with any local rules’ questions, or general USGA Rules of Golf questions
Post Play (Scoring Area)
In a designated scoring area, review each player’s scorecard hole-by-hole, and total each player’s scores for Round 1 and Round 2
Ensure all scorecards have two signatures (player and attestant)
Post each 18-hole round score on the scoreboard upon conclusion of play
Work with the PAT Examiner to record all final scores
Upon receipt of approval from the PAT Examiner that all duties of the Host Professional have been fulfilled, a $150 honorarium will be sent via ACH by the PGA of America National Office to the Host Professional. Failure to complete all the requirements as a Host Professional could result in no payment. If the Host Professional is also serving as the PAT Examiner only the $450 flat fee will be paid. If a PAT is conducted with less than ten (10) registrants, the fee paid will be dependent on the number of registrants.
