Wow, it's hard to believe it is October already. Most of the section is heading into their "off season", which means I switch gears and move into my busy season! I'm looking forward to seeing all of you, and a lot of members, at the upcoming Chapter Meetings, and I hope to use that opportunity to share important information with all CPGA Members and Associates. In this report, I would like to share information about:
Fall / Winter Career Coaching Opportunities
Pay Transparency Laws
Compensation profiles (again)
Fall / Winter Career Coaching Opportunities
Some of you may remember that I spent my first few winters as a Career Consultant traveling the section and meeting with PGA Members & Associates individually to discuss their careers. It was a wonderful way to visit our golf facilities and meet as many members as possible in a short amount of time. And truthfully, Career Coaching is my favorite aspect of the job. Unfortunately, shifting priorities has left me with no free time for my annual road show recently. And while this fall and winter is no different, I have decided to create a virtual option for Career Coaching opportunities, and have already sent an invitation to participate to all Assistants and Associates in the section (almost 700 people!)
I started with that group because there are so many new faces that I don't know, and earning their trust is important as I look for more ways to serve all CPGA members. You can CLICK HERE if you would like to schedule a session with me, and I am going to promote this at all upcoming Chapter Meetings and via email to all CPGA Members.
Pay transparency laws
A new law enacted by the state of New York went into effect on September 17th, which requires all jobs posted to include salary details in the job posting, even those posted on 3rd party websites (like the PGA Job Board). This is a growing trend, with New York now the 8th state to enact a law, and another 15 states considering something similar (see map below). You can read an article all about this HERE.
While neither North Carolina or South Carolina is currently considering such a law, this is worth watching. Many employers choose to hide the compensation for management level positions for various reasons, some of which I would consider legitimate. Looking at the most recent Year to Date data from job postings in the Carolinas:
34% of management level jobs chose to hide the compensation
20% of non-management jobs chose to hide the compensation
Looking at Execusearch jobs posted nationally since the start of 2022, 68% of those jobs chose to hide compensation. It remains to be seen if this will impact our Execusearch business, though I can imagine some employers choosing to conduct a search without actually posting the position publicly in order to avoid sharing compensation information.
Compensation Profiles
You will notice the number of PGA Compensation Profiles below is in RED, and eagle eyed Board Members will notice that the number is significantly higher than last month. At that time I said "It's a long story, but something was happening in our system that was causing an "update" to compensation profiles when Members weren't actually updating them (sigh). We noticed the issue and it was fixed on August 31...however, this means that we have not yet hit our goal for Compensation Profile's created or updated in 2023."
Well, we apparently found another issue and the number was adjusted again, this time upward (though not as high as we once were). What it means is that we are close to our goal of 994 required to receive $19,500 in additional ADP funding. I am fully confident that we will hit that number by the deadline, so thanks to everyone who made calls, sent emails, or simply got someone to complete their profile.
As you will see in the "Important Data" section below, there are still over 225 who simply have not updated their data in 2023 and over 480 people who have not ever provided their information.
Final Thoughts
It was great seeing so many of you at the Pro-Official in Charleston! As always, I appreciate the opportunity to work with all of you. Please let me know if you have any questions and how I can best support you and your Chapters.
Respectfully submitted,
Mike Mueller

937 have created or updated their Compensation Profile in 2023 (as of 10.13.23). This is 57 short of the goal of 994 needed to receive $19,500 in additional ADP funding. See above for an explanation of why this number is much higher than last month.
