Microphone Recommendation
While the app can do okay on its own using built-in laptop mics, it is best to use a Bluetooth headset or a close-by microphone to ensure the system picks up the correct words without room noise interference.
Platform Purpose
This is not meant to be your all-around translation or caption tool, but rather a lightweight, flexible option for filling in the gaps left by a lack of capability in other platforms during live direct instruction.
Small Group Stationing
Place a secondary monitor or tablet at a small group table while wearing your wireless mic so targeted students receive translated visual cues without distracting the rest of the room.
Whole-Class Direct Instruction
Open the tool in a separate browser tab, press Windows Key + Right Arrow to snap it to one side of your screen, and keep your lesson slides or document camera on the other half.
Emergent Bilingual (EB) Support
Select Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, or Chinese from the dropdown menu to project instant, translated subtitles during oral lectures.
Dual Monitor / Projector Casting
Drag the caption window over to your secondary classroom display or smartboard while managing your primary workspace on your device.
Literacy & Vocabulary Reinforcement
Model proper sentence capitalization, punctuation, and academic vocabulary live on-screen as you speak.
Want to create your own version of this sort of app?
To get started, put prompt below into GEMINI.
"Create a single-file HTML/CSS/JavaScript web application called "Classroom Live Caption Display" built with Tailwind CSS. The interface features a top control bar with a "Start Mic" button, "Stop" button, live recording indicator, and target language selection dropdown. Use the browser's Web Speech API for speech-to-text, rendering active speech in gray and finalized sentences in bold white. Use Google's free translation endpoint to translate finalized sentences in real time into selected languages (Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Russian, Korean). Format the display as a dark, high-contrast stage with large text and smooth auto-scrolling."
Quick Option (Gemini Canvas): Run and use the app directly inside Gemini Canvas mode to generate assets live.
Shareable Option (Google Sites / Canvas LMS): Ask Gemini to "provide a single HTML code block." Copy the code, go to your Google Site or Canvas page, select Embed > Embed Code, and paste it in.
File Option (Google Drive): Save the HTML code as an .html file and upload it to Google Drive to share directly with students/staff.
