Dear Parents,

I am your child’s 6th grade teacher for the 2017/2018 school year. I received my BA in Liberal Studies from Cal State Bakersfield and my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Sonoma State University. Last Spring I was awarded Masters in Education Technology through Touro University. This will be my fifth year teaching sixth grade and my eighth year teaching at McNear. I am very excited to be working with your child this year!

My philosophy for learning is that each child is unique, and each child learns in a different way. One of my jobs as a teacher is to help your child discover his or her individuality and work with them to maximize it. I believe in hands-on experiences, learning creatively, and working together. It is my goal to create a community of learners who are committed to working hard and having fun. I want students to leave my classroom feeling confident that they can apply what they’ve learned in school to real-life situations. I want my students to feel challenged and to have an enhanced passion for learning.

I am delighted to have your child in my class this year. I am looking forward to a very successful year and I know you are too. I have high expectations for your child and I will do all that I can to help your child achieve those expectations. I will be expecting all homework assigned in class to be completed and turned in the next day. Of course, all children do not work at the same pace. Some children may have the opportunity to get their work done in class if all class work is completed. Whether or not your child gets his or her work done in class has no effect on their grade. If your child does not complete an assignment in class, he or she will be required to complete it at home. Homework comes home daily Monday through Thursday. You can help by checking your child's planner or this website. It is critical that parents are consistent with checking the homework for accuracy, basic spelling, punctuation, and neat legible handwriting. Students are expected to do each assignment to the best of their ability and put it in their binder and backpack themselves, ready for the next morning.

In addition, I will be assigning projects in various subjects throughout the school year. Projects are to be completed at home. Your help and support will not only make your child more successful in school this year but will instill good study habits that will last a lifetime.

Finally, I want you to know that one of my most important goals this year is to keep the lines of communication open with you. I am available every day to talk with you between 8:00 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. and between 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at 707-778-4752 or adowdy@petk12.0rg if you have any questions or concerns during the year.
