Do parasites make your skin crawl? Have you ever wondered how parasites benefit and harm their host? This week’s Flying Classroom COVID19 Learning Activity focuses on, and dispels myths, about parasites! Students take a virtual expedition to San Francisco, California to meet my fellow National Geographic Explorer, Anand Varma. Anand is a photographer and scientist, studying the world of parasitic species. He is an amazing representation of how the arts and science are collaborative in STEM+.
After the virtual expedition to San Francisco, students learn how hand sanitizer can protect them from becoming a host to parasites. They also create their own hand sanitizer from materials at home. If students do not have materials to create hand sanitizer, then they are challenged to create a model of a parasite using upcycled and recycled materials. The Flying Classroom COVID19 Learning Activity can be found below. To view Flying Classroom’s Parasite Expedition Video, please click on this link https://vimeo.com/314236008
We hope that you will encourage your students, teachers, and families to take this very relevant and timely journey into the mysterious world of parasitic species.
As a reminder, Flying Classroom is here to support your unique COVID19 learning experience. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions about the learning activities, would like to schedule a live session, or need support transforming your STEM+ classroom into a virtual destination.
Stay safe and healthy!
Blue Skies,
Captain Barrington Irving
