Peru Catholic School Spanish Program
¡Bienvenido al Español!
I’m very excited to be a part of the Peru Catholic Family and look forward to working with your child(ren) to learn the Spanish language & culture!
A little about myself: My name is Mrs. Anastacia Ross (Señora Ross to your children). My three children have been attending Peru Catholic since kindergarten and I was an active volunteer at the school in the classrooms & library for several years before joining the faculty for the 2017-18 school year. We attend St. Joseph Church & I sing in the adult choir. Many of you may also know me from Echo Bluff, where I spend my summers as an Assistant Camp Director at the summer day camps. I have a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Marquette University with a double-major in Manufacturing Engineering and Spanish Language & Literature. While in high school, I participated in an exchange program in Toluca, México and after completing my Engineering degree, studied at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Madrid, Spain to complete my Spanish degree.
I have always loved Spanish and hope I can infect the students with some of my excitement!
Depending on the grade level, I meet each class 2-3 times a week. All classes will continue to learn & say prayers in Spanish. Our Spanish School Mass was such a success last May that we we be planning more this school year. The main goal for the younger students is to introduce them to the Spanish language & culture & excite them. I plan to do most work in class, however they may need to bring occasional work home as homework if they don’t complete it in class.
The goal for the intermediate & junior high grades is to become more familiar with written Spanish, as well as spoken, with the ultimate goal for eighth grade being to pass the St. Bede Spanish Proficiency Exam, allowing them to skip Spanish 1 & be placed directly into Spanish 2. They will have a bit more work (most done during class) & also occasional quizzes & exams.
This year we will also be adding a Spanish Club! More info on this in the future.
I know there are a few parents who are Spanish-speakers. I would LOVE to have you help out with a class or two to share your background with the students (maybe help us celebrate an important holiday, learn a song or dance, do a craft, etc. - I’m open to ideas!). I would also love to have visits from parents/people who use Spanish regularly in their jobs. I want to make the Spanish language come alive as much as possible for the students, so they don’t think of it as just another subject, but as a means to communicate, explore, & enjoy the world around us!
