Ms. Johnna's Kindergarten

Welcome to Kindergarten at Peru Catholic

Welcome to Kindergarten! I hope you and your child are as excited about our year together as I am. I understand that you and your child may have met this day with excitement or apprehension (or a little of both). First of all, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Ms Johnna Schultz. I have previously worked as a teaching assistant for preschool the last two years here at PCS. I obtained a Bachelor Degree of Psychology at Monmouth College and I am currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education at Northern Illinois University.

I hope that this letter will explain some of the procedures that we will use throughout the year. I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year and helping him/her to achieve their full potential.

Parent-Teacher Relationships I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is important for maximum school success. Throughout the year, I will communicate with you through notes, emails, phone calls, weekly newsletters, and parent-teacher conferences. I encourage you to send a note or email me with questions or concerns. I will then get back to you as soon as possible. You can also call me before and after school.

Arrival and Departure Children are to arrive by 8:05 A.M. each day. The doors will open at 7:55 A.M. We will dismiss at 3:00 P.M. At dismissal, we will be coming out the front doors by the school office and I will have the students tell me when they see their ride before I send them out to you. Please be patient as I get through each child.

Monday- Music & PE

Tuesday-Art & Spanish

Wednesday- Art & Computers

Thursday- Computers & PE

Friday- Spanish

Mass and Prayers We will be attending Mass on each Friday at 10:30 A.M. The prayers the children will be learning are The Our Father, Hail Mary and the Sign of the Cross.

Snacks/Helper/Show and Tell Children will be asked to bring snacks for the entire class on a rotating basis. You will be notified in advance by a monthly calendar when your child is to bring snacks. At this time we have 22 students in our class. Healthy snacks are best. Please check the attached snack calendar and the note concerning snack specifics. This “snack” day will be your child’s special day. This means they will not only be the snack person but also the show and tell person for the day. This is the one and only day of the month that they are able to bring a toy into the classroom. Please help your child to think of three things to tell us about their show and tell item. They will share these three things at show and tell time. This will help to build conversation skills.

Birthdays Children may bring in a special treat, such as, cookies or cupcakes on their birthday. Children with summer birthdays are welcome to celebrate their birthday on another day during the school year, perhaps on their half birthday. Please fill out the Unbirthday sheet if your child has a summer birthday. I will try my best to correlate your child’s birthday with their snack day for that month.

Parties There will be three special class parties during the year: Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day.

Water Bottles Water bottles will be allowed for your child to drink from throughout the day. Please make sure they are in a container that doesn’t spill and put their name on it. We will not be filling them up at school, and they must be water only.

Rest We will be having a “brain break”. We will take about 15-20 minutes around snack time.

Labeling Please put your child’s name on all articles of clothing that will be taken off at school: gym shirt and shoes, paint shirt, sweatshirts, sweaters, jackets, winter gear, etc

Names If your child is trying to write his/her name be sure to instruct him/her to capitalize only the first letter. Children this age tend to want to write in all capitals, but we will be focusing on proper form.

Absences It is important that you call the school and report your child’s absence.

Lunch All children are required to bring a sack lunch until September 4th. You should be receiving an email from the office with the menu. There also is one in this packet.

Conferences Conferences are held to report your child’s progress in November. We may want to meet as the need arises at other times throughout the year.

Website and Email Please check the Peru Catholic website at for a school calendar, lunch menu, important dates and information. I also have a classroom website that I am in the process of setting up. This is where I will be uploading a weekly newsletter and snack calendar. There will be other information shared on this website. I will do my best to email the weekly newsletter to you on every Friday. Please make sure I have your email address.

The first year of school is very important in forming a good attitude toward the remaining school years. I hope to make this year a fun, rewarding and positive experience for you and your child. Again, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
