The Ohio Department of Education has determined that to be a mentor, one must meet both the licensure and teaching experience critera listed below.

To become a fully trained mentor recognized by ODE, one must complete Resident Educator Mentor Academy Day 1 and Day 2 at state-sponsored training sites. Registration for both days of training is done through STARS.

LICENSURE
- 5-year Professional License OR
- 2-year Provisional that has been renewed 2 or more times OR
- Permanent Certificate
Teaching Experience
- 5 years teaching experience
- Recent classroom experience within 5 years
