Welcome to Afton Art

The Pennsbury School District Art Philosophy

Throughout the development of civilization, humans have always visually expressed themselves in their world. This expression fulfills a basic need to communicate in a non-verbal way. This need includes communication of beliefs, traditions, self-expression, and development of creative and new ideas. The visual arts fulfill this need.

By implementing the K-12 art curriculum, art teachers provide all students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to produce art. As a result, students will understand and evaluate the artistic work or others and will realize that art is a reflection of the society that produces it. A sequential, broad-based approach to art provides appropriate learning in art history, aesthetics, criticism, and production.

The expression and understanding of the visual world is essential for every student and adult living and working in the 21st Century. Creativity, decision-making, risk-taking, and analytical and critical thinking skills play a pivotal role in preparing the student to participate and to survive in this society
