This course emphasizes study and activities related to the development of a child from the prenatal stage through the first years of life. Understanding Children introduces 10th, 11th, and 12th graders to children by examining the challenging face of the family in American society. Societal trends, family life cycles stages and theories for optimal child development from the past as well as the latest discoveries are all part of the Understanding Children course. This is a personal enrichment course for the student interested in the developing child and the constant interaction with family and society. 10th, 11th, & 12th Grades
The Nursery School class is a practical course of study to introduce the high school student to the preschool child in a laboratory setting. Nursery School – Child development emphasizes study and activities related to the development of the preschool child. The course allows students to apply their knowledge of human development to a real-world, career-exploration experience. A Nursery School lab provides opportunities for observing and applying theories and skills. This course is recommended for students who are interested in learning more about children, in careers working with children, or in developing parenting skills. 11th & 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Understanding Children
Practical Child Development builds on previous learning of human development and provides a career exploration experience in the field of education. This course emphasizes study and activities related to the development of the school-age child. Each student will be assigned a practical experience within the Pennsbury community to assist a child-care supervisor or elementary school teacher. Practical Child Development provides a professional experience with transferable workplace expectations. Students in Practical Child Development prepare a portfolio which would be suitable for a job or college interview. This course is recommended for students who are interested in becoming a teacher, child care provider, or interested in the older child. External placement in the community is contingent on completion of all class work as well as adherence to the Practical Child Development contract. 12th Grade
