Accessing Behavioral Health Services
Finding a Psychologist/Psychiatrist for your Child
Look at the back of your insurance card. Call the number listed as Behavioral Health Providers (sometimes it may say Mental Health Providers).
Things to ask:
Is there a preferred providers list of psychiatrists/psychologists who work with children? → Ask for the list.
Can I go out of network?
Can I go out of state to see someone?
Do I need a pre-authorization?
Is there a deductible?
Is there a co-pay? If not, what percentage of each visit do I need to pay for?
If I go out of network, what is the coverage?
How may visits per calendar year are covered? In and out of network?
When you call the providers from the list you requested:
Leave a message asking the psychiatrist/psychologist/therapist to call you so that you can discuss your concerns regarding evaluating your child’s needs.
Things to consider:
Does the psychiatrist call you back in a timely fashion?
Do you feel reasonably comfortable talking to this person?
Do they listen to you and your concerns?
Can they tell you how they will go about assessing your child?
Can they develop goals and a plan of action to help you and your child?
