Setting Description
Hello everyone!
This week in school, we had lots of fun learning some Christmas signs using Makaton. Makaton is a special language program that uses signs and symbols alongside talking to help everyone communicate!
This week, our sign of the week was angel!
Using Makaton signs helps everyone, especially friends who find it harder to talk, to understand and share what they want to say. When we sign and speak at the same time, we're helping our whole school be a great place to communicate!
Ask your child to show you the signs they learnt this week. Practice using them together at home. The more you use Makaton, the easier it becomes!
Happy signing!
This week, a group of 12 Year 4 pupils visited Yew Tree Lodge Care Home in Hoo to spread some festive cheer with a selection of Christmas carols. It was a truly heartwarming afternoon that proved to be a wonderful experience for everyone involved; there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as the residents were moved to tears, finding it deeply touching to experience the magic of the season through young eyes once again.Â
These visits are incredibly special as they foster a real sense of community spirit, helping our pupils feel like a valued part of the local Hoo area. The trip was also a great opportunity to develop our empathy skills, as the children learned the importance of kindness and the value of spending quality time with their elders.Â
The day was defined by shared joy - the music and laughter offered a lovely break in the residents' routine and stirred many nostalgic memories, leaving both the children and their audience with spirits lifted and ready for Christmas!
School Events
At Leigh Academy Peninsula East, we value the participation in extra curricular activities. Across the school, children have participated in a range of enrichment clubs, each one offering a different way to develop children’s interest in different ways. From threading needles to crafting stories, from mindful breathing to phonics games, the energy has been infectious.
Sewing Club
Sewing Club has been a blend of creativity, patience and problem‑solving working with Spinola to create bookmarks. Children have learned how to thread needles, sew simple stitches and bring small fabric creations to life. They made these bookmarks by sewing the letters of their names. The pride on their faces as they completed their handmade projects has been a joy to witness. Many discovered that sewing isn’t just a craft, it’s a calming, confidence‑building skill that rewards perseverance.
Mindfulness Club
In Mindfulness Club, pupils explored ways to slow down, breathe deeply and tune into the present moment. They worked with Miss Goldfinch, through gentle activities such as mindful colouring, guided breathing and gratitude reflections, children developed strategies for calm they can use both in and out of the classroom. It has been inspiring to see them embrace stillness and recognise the power of taking a pause.
Creative Writing Club
The children have been busy working with Miss Holtshausen dreaming up characters, building worlds and experimenting with language. Creative Writing Club has given them the space to play with ideas, share their work and celebrate the magic of storytelling. From poems to mini-adventures, their imaginative voices have grown stronger each week, and the confidence with which they read aloud has been truly heartwarming.
Phonics Club
Phonics Club has been full of enthusiasm, laughter and those wonderful moments. Children have been working with practised blending, segmenting and recognising sounds through games, challenges and playful activities . Their growing confidence as readers has been clear to see, and the club has helped many strengthen their early literacy skills in a fun, supportive environment.
The children enjoyed other clubs such as football and gymnastics clubs this term. It is great to see the children enjoying these enrichment activities and we're looking forward to see them signing up for more of these clubs next module.Â
Year 6 - Art ProjectÂ
This term, our Year 6 artists have been transported back to the 19th century to recreate the grit and atmosphere of the Industrial Revolution.
Using their refined sketching skills, the children first mapped out the towering chimneys and busy skylines of the Victorian era. To truly capture the "dark satanic mills," we moved away from traditional palettes and explored the textures of powdered paint.
The children experimented with blending and layering to create deep, moody shades, successfully mimicking the soot and smog of the era. The result is a stunning collection of work that feels both historical and atmospheric.
PTFA Christmas FairÂ
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful PTFA for organising such a fantastic Christmas Fair. It was a brilliant event that brought our school community together, and we are so grateful for the hard work that went into making it a success.
All funds raised go directly towards supporting our pupils and providing a wide range of enriching experiences. Thanks to the PTFA’s tireless fundraising, we have already been able to enjoy our book vending machine, whole-school art workshops, and visits from inspiring authors. Looking ahead, we are now exploring exciting whole-school computing workshops.
Thank you to our PTFA for your continued dedication; these opportunities simply wouldn’t be possible without your support.
