It has been a busy and exciting month here at Pencoed Primary! We’ve enjoyed a fantastic pantomime, supported Children in Need, marked Remembrance Sunday, and taken part in Anti-Bullying Week. We also celebrated a special recognition of our work with Service children, and received thanks from Table Tennis Wales for our involvement. And that’s just a snapshot—there’s been so much more happening across the school!
A huge thank you to our school community for your generosity with Children in Need donations. Your support makes such a difference.
As the festive season quickly approaches, please pay special attention to the dates section at the end of this newsletter, as there are lots of exciting events coming up that we don’t want you to miss!
Dr Sarjeant
Attendance and Punctuality
Regular attendance is vital to ensure that children make the best possible progress at school. Children who miss school unnecessarily, or who arrive late to school miss out on crucial learning time and experiences with their peers.
For the past three school weeks, our whole school attendance has been above 96%. This is a tremendous effort and testament to everybody's commitment in recognising how important regular school attendance is. Furthermore, this is also at a time when winter illnesses generally increase which makes its all the more impressive!
Our current whole school attendance figure for this academic year is 94.39%. We are very grateful to you all for working with us as we aspire to reach our target of 95%.
Any requests to pick children up within the school day (e.g. for medical/dental appointments) must be communicated in advance via admin@pencoedps.bridgend.cymru. We also ask that parents provide a copy of appointment letters as relevant. Where possible, all appointments should be made outside of school hours. Finally, if your child is not in school due to illness, please be reminded that we need to record the reason for absence and so may ask for specific information to include on your child's registration records.
As always, if we can support in any way please do not hesitate to get in touch with either Mr Raymond or Mrs Julie Jenkins.
It has been fantastic to see so many pupils attending clubs throughout the Autumn Term. This week will be the last week for clubs this term. Therefore, there will NOT be any clubs from the week beginning Monday 1st December (apart from cookery club). Information regarding spring clubs to follow. Thank you to staff for volunteering to run the clubs this term.
We are delighted to officially welcome Miss Hancock to our school community. She has settled in wonderfully and has already proven to be a fantastic addition to the Sunbeams team.
Thank you to our year 6 pupils who represented the school during the Remembrance service. The pupils showed respect and resilience throughout the service in the chapel and during the parade. Da iawn!
ANTI-BULLYING WEEK
To mark Anti-Bullying Week, pupils were invited to wear odd socks to school as a fun way to celebrate what makes each of us unique.
Our School Council also led a special assembly, raising awareness about bullying and sharing practical ways to help if someone feels they are experiencing it. The message was clear: everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued.
Thank you for supporting this important initiative and helping us promote a culture of respect and inclusion.
If you have any concerns about bullying, please speak to a member of school staff - we are all here to help.
The school council met with Bridgend Rotary Club yesterday to discuss our partnership this year. We have a long and established relationship with the Rotary club and look to work on joint projects and fundraising. Watch this space for more news on this year's initiatives!
Our school has achieved the Silver Status Award from SSCE Cymru (Supporting Service Children in Education). This award recognises the work we do to support children from Armed Forces families. It means we have strong systems in place to make sure these pupils feel included, understood, and supported in their learning and wellbeing.
A special mention to Mrs King for her fantastic efforts in championing and coordinating this work within our school. Her dedication has been key to achieving this award!
Our Upper School pupils showed fantastic enthusiasm and curiosity when visitors from Kidney Wales invited us to pilot their brand-new information assembly. The session was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to learn more about kidney health and the importance of organ donation, and they asked some brilliant questions throughout.
A huge thank you to Kidney Wales for making this possible, and a special thank you to Sam, Barney’s mum, who kindly shared how Chronic Kidney Disease has impacted their family. We are also incredibly grateful to Barney for allowing his journey to be shared—it really helped our pupils understand the real-life impact of CKD.
A huge thank you to all the families that were able to visit our book fair recently. It was lovely to see pupils from across the school eager to find a new book to enjoy reading. Your purchases helped to raise £280 worth of books for the school library.
A special mention to the staff and year 6 pupils who volunteered to stay behind after school to help run the fair. Diolch!
We’ve been really busy in Little Stars learning about Remembrance Day in our own wonderful way during Attention Autism sessions, maths tasks and we worked together to decorate a poppy. We also celebrated Children in Need by using Pudsey bear to count and were super clever creating a playdough Pudsey. We are so proud of our Little Stars!
Our nursery pupils have had an exciting few weeks filled with learning and fun. They’ve been exploring mark making as part of their early writing journey, learning about the significance of Remembrance Sunday, and celebrating Children in Need with a very special visitor—Pudsey Bear!
Our Early Years and Lower School classes enjoyed a special pantomime performance of 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. There was plenty of laughter, smiles and even some teacher dance participation!
Callum Evans, Table Tennis Wales’ South East Regional Development Officer, who is also currently the highest ranked Men’s player in Wales, visited our Table Tennis club this month and provided us with some great feedback:
'It was lovely to come into your school last week and see the children playing table tennis. They were all really well behaved, and they were all really interested in table tennis which was great to see.'
A big thank you to Sam, Barney's mum, who supports Mr Hopkins with the running of the club! Our pupils are so lucky!
Our recent non-uniform day for Children in Need was a tremendous success! Thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised over £480 – what an amazing achievement!
Our Early Years and Lower School classes were thrilled to welcome a very special visitor… Pudsey Bear! The children loved meeting Pudsey and learning more about the important work Children in Need does to help others.
Upper School pupils stepped back in time for the launch of their new topic, From Toys to Toil, exploring what life was like for Victorian children. During an action-packed Immersion Day, pupils crafted their own Victorian toys, created traditional portraits, and even took part in authentic PE drills.
One of the highlights of the day was a taste of Victorian classroom discipline—rows of silent pupils experiencing the strict routines of the era! A special mention goes to Mrs Williams, who fully embraced her role as the formidable Victorian teacher.
While 14th November is widely recognised for Children in Need, it also marks another important occasion – World Diabetes Day! One of our pupils, who lives with this condition, was eager to share vital information to help raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of Type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. The exact cause is unknown, and it is not linked to lifestyle factors. Currently, there is no cure, and it cannot be prevented.
Knowing the signs and symptoms of Type 1 diabetes could help save a life! Look out for the 4 T’s:
Toilet – Going to the toilet more often
Thirsty – Feeling very thirsty
Tired – Feeling unusually tired
Thinner – Losing weight unexpectedly
If you notice these signs, seek medical advice promptly. Awareness saves lives!
Tuesday, 25th November, 2025, marked the first National Children of Prisoners Day in the UK.
As a school we support children and families impacted by a loved one's imprisonment. Our school champion is Mrs King, if you would like more information or advice, please contact Mrs King.
Congratulations to Rosie on her fantastic achievements in gymnastics! She recently competed in two competitions. As a result, Rosie qualified for the Welsh Finals representing the South Central Region, where she placed 5th on vault and helped her team become Welsh Champions. Well done, Rosie!

This month we are working towards is ‘ensuring that Welsh language is visible throughout the school’. As Criw Cymraeg, we have been looking out for Welsh across the school and areas which need improving.
We are also celebrating ‘amser Nadolig’ (Christmas time), in school. As a Criw, we are ensuring that Welsh language is included within the celebrations.
Diolch,
Criw Cymraeg
Our Family Engagement team have been very busy this month! They helped Mrs Jenkins to deliver the Harvest donations to the food bank, designed invitations for our 'Community Christmas Lunch', on top of their usual baby and toddler duties! Mrs Jenkins has been delighted by their enthusiasm and commitment, and she was thrilled to present them with their 'Family Engagement Team' badges in assembly.
Mrs Jenkins says it has been a busy and exciting month!
Angel, our therapy dog, has been spreading joy by listening to children play the violin – a truly calming and magical moment for everyone involved.
Griff the dog had a wonderful time watching pupils create amazing models of him – the creativity on display was fantastic!
Our parents and carers have been busy crafting beautiful decorations and items that will make our upcoming Community Christmas Lunch extra special.
The Baby and Toddler Group joined in the fun for Children in Need, enjoying activities that brought lots of smiles and laughter.
