Welcome back!
It was wonderful to see so many smart children coming in smiling this morning. I trust you all had a good summer break.
The school site has undergone some improvements over the break which I am pleased to share with you. Firstly the outside area at the back of our nursery has been completely revamped allowing children to enjoy an all-purpose play surface with a shelter for inclement weather, a new water play bench and new mark-making boards. Additionally our library has been redecorated, creating a smart, airy space to be enjoyed by all. We are very grateful to our PSA who have already offered some funds to help us buy some smart new seating for our library to complete the new look.
Take One Picture Art Exhibition
I wonder if anyone managed to see our children's art work on display in the National gallery this summer? Staff who visited reported feeling very proud seeing our children's artwork right in the entrance to the exhibition and as part of the information film!
We are now proudly displaying around school the artwork completed by children for this year's take One Picture project. Look out for it as you wander around school this term. It is stunning!
Music updates
We are delighted to be welcoming our new music teacher, Miss Scott to the team. She will meet every class over the next two weeks and singing assemblies start this Thursday too.
Miss Scott will be sharing a 'Song of the Week' each week. This week's song is Back in School Again - hopefully children will be able to listen to this with you at home and feel positive about the school year ahead.
Reminders
Meet the Teacher - THIS WEDNESDAY
For children starting in Years 1 to 6, teachers will be in their classrooms after school until 4pm for a 'Meet the Teacher' session. We know that there is a lot of information you will want to know about the year group your child has started and this session is an opportunity to be given all this information and to ask any questions. It isn't just an opportunity to say 'hello' to the teacher!
So, please do take advantage of this time to hear more about the year ahead. Teachers will be available until 4pm so that parents with more than one class to visit will have ample time to do so.
School Meals
Please talk to your children to remind them that we can only serve them the meal that has been ordered. We cannot serve them an alternative if they have changed their mind or say they don't like what has been ordered.
Walking Home Alone
Children in Years 5 and 6 are allowed to walk home alone IF their parent or guardian has given permission for them to do so. You can update permissions on Arbor. Please note that while we allow these older children to walk home alone, we do not allow these children to walk their younger siblings home. All children in nursery, Reception and Years 1 to 4 will need to be collected by an adult.
Summer Reading Challenge
If your child completed all or some of the Summer Reading Challenge, please remind them to bring this to school by next Monday.
Transition to Year 7 - Secondary School Open Days
If your child is in Year 5 or Year 6, you will most likely want to visit local secondary schools in the coming weeks. The deadline for Year 6 parents to apply for their child's Year 7 place is 31st October 2026.
B&NES have some useful resources to help you navigate this application process: https://www.bathnes.gov.uk/secondary-admissions-arrangements-2027-2028
Here are some open evening dates for our local secondary schools:
Hayesfield Girls School
Thursday 11th September, 5:45pm - 8:30pm

Ralph Allen School

St Gregory's Catholic College
Thursday 1st October, 6:00pm - 8:30pm
Most schools also offer visits during the school day - please check their websites for more information on these and how to book. If a child attends an open event during the school day, we are able to record this as an authorised absence.
Medical conditions, allergies, prescribed medication, dietary needs
PSJ is your child's safe space during the school day and it is hugely important that you tell us about anything that could affect this.
Please take a few minutes to check Arbor to make sure that all details are up to date.
Staff are able to supervise the administration of prescribed medication in most cases but, as always, there is paperwork involved and we need to get this right to keep your child safe.
We would ask that you let us know whether something is an allergy or a preference, especially around food as this can make a huge difference to our response in an emergency situation.
If in any doubt at all, please contact the Office and they'll guide you through the bits we need to know.
Links in website
Please be aware that due to circumstances beyond our control, many links on our school website are currently not working. We are in the process of fixing these, however if you need access in the meantime to something that wont open, please contact the school office.

Home Learning
Home learning is designed to enable children to practice skills they will need in school and so it is really important that they spend some time over the week on this home learning.
The button below will take you to this week's home learning slides.
Attendance is the essential foundation to positive outcomes for all pupils and should therefore be seen as everyone’s responsibility. Following the MNSP Trust Attendance Policy MNSP Attendance Policy our hope is for all pupils to attend 97% and above. We understand there are many reasons why children do not achieve this and as a school we endeavour to support you and your child to obtain the best they can.
As you know last year we started sending termly emails informing you if your child's attendance has dropped below 97%. We will continue to send these this year and over the next few weeks you will receive an email with your child's overall attendance for the whole of the last academic year. If you have any concerns around this or would like to discuss your child's attendance please contact the school office.
As a reminder you can find our schools attendance expectations on our website by clicking this link Attendance Policy.
Inclusion Updates
We are committed to driving inclusion at Peasedown School and ensuring every child feels supported and valued. We recognise that some children need additional support to thrive, and we are pleased to utilise the Thrive Approach—a whole-school, trauma-informed program grounded in neuroscience and attachment theory that enables our staff to build emotional resilience and respond to children's needs. We also understand that transitions, such as arriving at school in the morning or navigating unstructured times like lunch, can be challenging for some. To support this, we have updated our inclusion offer with new strategies and spaces to help all children feel a sense of belonging and stability throughout the day.
We are introducing a few changes to our morning routine to help all children feel a sense of belonging right from the start of the day.
Wherever possible, please ensure your child goes directly to their classroom first thing in the morning. Our early morning activities begin at 8:30am, providing a valuable time for children to settle in and engage with their peers. For children who may need extra support during this transition, we have specific transition activities available.
Please be assured that the Rainbow Room remains available if needed, and Mrs. Buckle will continue to receive or visit children who require additional support.
We are making changes to lunchtimes; access to the Rainbow Room and Mrs. Buckle will change daily depending on need. Teachers and support staff will identify children who need to attend.
We also have a range of other spaces for children who find the large playground too busy:
Small hall for pupils requiring a quiet place to eat away from the large hall (agreed with class teacher) - some pupils may play in here quietly once they have finished eating
Library and sensory room - quiet drop-in space with Mrs Dando
Courtyard - small play area for children requiring support with behaviour or social skills
12:00-12:30: Rainbow Room drop-ins with Mrs Buckle
If you feel that your child is struggling or needs someone to talk to, please speak to the class teacher in the first instance or email Mrs Dando at senco@peasedown.mnsp.org.uk.

You can find a range of support services on the Support for Families page on our website by clicking this link Support for Families - Peasedown St John Primary School.
