How can we demonstrate love for others by preparing food to share in our community?
In this project, students partner with the community (a local organization, other community members, or their own family). This meal could serve one of several possible purposes:
Feeding hungry community members
Honoring a specific group of people (elders, firefighters, volunteers)
Celebrating or commemorating a special event
Building neighborhood connections
Given an estimated number of attendees, students research recipes and food prices and identify quantities and costs of ingredients to develop a reasonable and actionable plan for the meal. Students will present their plan in a slide presentation.
Student(s) will complete a slide presentation that includes a menu and a detailed, itemized shopping list with ingredient and cost totals
Common Core State Standards—Mathematics
3.OA.C.7 Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
3.NBT.A.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Common Core State Standards—ELA-Literacy
W.3.7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.
W.3.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.
Students will follow the four project phases in this order. Phases are listed across the top of this site:
This project was developed for students to complete at home with the support of their parents. It loosely follows the PBL Project Path, as described by PBLWorks. Follow the four phases in order across the top of this site:
Launch
Build Knowledge
Develop and Critique
Present Product
Complete all the steps in one phase before moving onto the next. *
