Student leaders are looked to as model students at Portland State. As such, it is important that student leaders exemplify a balance between academics and leadership. As citizens who are or are going to be leaders in the community, it is important to be prepared academically. Did you know that most graduate programs require over a 3.5 GPA to be admitted? Being a model student leader requires that you be a model student first.
Research has shown that participation in student organizations and other co-curricular activities on campus can help students stay engaged with school, get good grades, and graduate. However, students often have many competing obligations (family, work, student leadership, health) which causes academic performance can suffer. Student leadership is important, but we need to emphasize that you must be a student first. Letting academics slip to benefit student leadership responsibilities is counter-productive. Please work with your SALP Advisor; they can help you find resources available to you, discuss balancing academics and leadership, and explore ways to delegate responsibilities in your student organization.
To remain eligible as a SALP student leader, you need to maintain the following:
Undergraduate students: Quarterly & Cumulative GPA: 2.5, enrollment in a minimum of 6 credits
Graduate students: Quarterly & Cumulative GPA of 3.0, enrollment in a minimum of 5 credits
Note: There are also many other PSU resources that are available to help you be successful and reach your goals. If you need help finding these resources, connect with your Advisor or Coordinator.
