The Wilma Morrison Award, honoring the memory of the former journalist, professor, and Vanguard advisor, is presented by the Student Media Board for outstanding journalistic writing by a PSU student.
This year’s recipient is Dylan Jefferies, for his story in the Vanguard, “Shelter from the Storm,” about the displacement of thousands of Oregonians in last year’s wildfires and the role of University Place Hotel during this crisis. The story demonstrates extensive journalistic effort and uses an effective structure to draw readers into the urgency of the unfolding events.
This award is accompanied by a $300 scholarship from the Wilma Morrison Foundation.
Congratulations Dylan!
The Wilma Morrison Award has been given on the basis of:
Journalistic effort: original reporting rather than derivative analysis of reporting from other sources; extent of interviews and documents obtained, challenging obstacles overcome
Quality of information: accurate in fact and coherent in logic; subject matter important to the campus community or society at large
Effective writing: clear, artful, and free of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors
