My commitment to providing exemplary services and products based on a paradigm of cultural competence, cultural responsiveness and social justice is long-held. Since earning my Bachelor’s Degree in linguistics at Brown University in 1983, a teaching license and Master’s Degree in Special Education at Portland State University in 1993 and 1996, respectively, I have worked as an advocate for multicultural populations and been involved in the delivery educational services and advocacy for underserved populations. For over two decades, I have held positions in education services as a special education teacher; health educator for the Oregon Health Division, Director of education for a PPS-contracted alternative school, educational publisher’s representative, in-service provider, and currently work as a senior admissions advisor and program specialist for the College of Education with a focus on Department of Special Education programs. I am responsible for recruitment, outreach and student support for multiple department programs. I guide, advise and support students from cultural, ethnic, linguistic and diverse backgrounds to reduce barriers from admission and matriculation to program completion. In addition to program management and student support roles, I am instrumental in collaborating with faculty, administrators and students to advance the College of Education’s equity initiatives.
