My aunt, Mary Nell Stockwell, and her husband Bob gave me a wonderful home for my high school years. They made sacrifices for me including where to locate their home when we moved to Puerto Rico. They trusted me unquestioningly, for example letting me take their car all over the island despite the wild roads and drivers there.
Mary Nell was a very giving person. Always supportive. Always strong. Always there.
She was great at taking things in stride. Nothing worried her or got under her skin. She seemed to have seen it all.
There is no doubt in my mind that Mary Nell and Bob provided the support I needed to steer away from a path to ruin. I was like a dive bombing plane that pulled up at the last second before hitting the ground. I thrived in their home in every way. Today I am 43 and I have a happy life with a wonderful wife and children. Mary Nell and Bob made a critical contribution to my life.
Mary Nell helped others as well. She helped her husband who was badly injured in an accident. She took in three of my cousins when their mother died. She took in her mother in her old age. And of course, she helped and supported her eight children.
Unfortunately, she passed away a couple of years ago. I will always remember her smile, her company, her wisdom, and her steady hand.
