Esther E. O'Grady

Areas of Achievement:

Esther O’Grady is the wife of Gerry Wygant. Esther was the training officer in the Human Resources Department of Portland State University. Esther was also an instructor in the School of Business Administration. Esther is a graduate of Macalster College in St. Paul, Minnesota with a BA in English. Esther then went to Washington State University and obtained a MA in English. Esther retired several years ago and now lives in Portland with me.

I first met Esther in 1978 when she was teaching in the School of Business Administration at PSU. I was a finance professor and taught in a classroom across the hall from Esther. I was single and immediately took a shine to Esther and started to have coffee several times a week with her. I had my share of attractive women but never found one that had great appeal to me. I asked Esther out to a movie and snack. We went to the Hollywood Theater, where I represented the owner and had an annual pass for two people. After the movie, we went to Produce Row Tavern, where I also represented the owner and got free beer and food. Esther did not seem impressed with my contacts and I took her home. I expected to be asked in and was stopped at the gate for a hand-shaking. To penalize Esther for not letting me stay the night. I did not call her for at least a month. Our relationship evolved into a marriage. I am still very happy with the relationship and it was the best thing that ever happened to me and Esther.

I retired from PSU and moved into a law firm on 6th and Clay. The high point of my day is when Esther and our dog (an Irish Terrier) arrive to pick me up to go home. Thank you, Esther.
