Raised in California, she received her master's degree in Library Science at University of Oregon in 1971 and arrived in Portland in the fall of 1975 to begin her career with the Portland Public Schools. She worked as a school librarian from 1975 to 1981 and then was employed in a series of district administration positions: Coordinator of the Elementary Libraries; Administrator of School Libraries, and Administrator of Educational Media. She was the first African American woman to hold these positions. As Administrator of Educational Media her responsibility was to work with curriculum leaders supervising the evaluation and purchasing of educational media and teacher instructional materials. Her challenge and educational goal in this role was to provide cultural awareness to educators for multicultural education. She was the first Black woman to serve as President of the Portland School Librarians Association; her community service includes membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
