Non-Degree status is designed for students who want to take courses at Portland State University but are 1) not in a degree program currently or 2) not interested in a degree program. Non-Degree entry gives you limited registration access to PSU classes. All credits you receive are fully accredited and transferable to PSU and institutions that accept PSU credits. It can take up to 3 business days to process your account, please start early.
If you previously applied to PSU as a non-degree applicant, your non-degree status is continuous, and you can register for classes.
Have never attended PSU
Can only enroll in 8 or fewer credits per term (21 credits or fewer in summer term)
Cannot pursue a degree from Portland State University
Cannot receive financial aid
Go to Portland State University's online application system and select Create an Account. If you have already started an application, or created one for a past term, select Log In.
You will be directed to Banweb. Please follow the steps for admission. Select one of the Non-Degree options from the drop down menu: Non-Degree Undergraduate (if you do not have a bachelor's degree or have not completed graduate level classes at PSU) or Non-Degree Graduate (if you have a bachelor's degree)
Pay the non-refundable $25 application fee; you will be required to pay this via Visa or MasterCard. A $2.00 processing fee will apply. If you are asked to pay any other fee amount, you are in the incorrect place.
Keep your browser window open after you submit to view your welcome message and to get your PSU ID number. You will also receive information on your ODIN account and PSU password.
Before you start, there are a few things to do to set up your account. You should receive an email confirming your PSU ID. Now it is time to set-up your account. Please follow the instructions below to set up your account by visiting the OAM website. Instructions are below.
If you did not receive an email to confirm your PSU ID within 24 hours, please follow the instructions below to re-set your password.

Go to the Odin Account Manager (OAM) at oam.pdx.edu.
Select Reset Password.
Enter the external (non-PSU) email address or cell phone number you provided when you set up your password recovery information.
Check your external (non-PSU) email or cell phone for a password reset code.
Enter the password reset code into the Reset Code field, then select Submit.
Choose a new password that meets the requirements listed on the page, and enter it into the New Password and Confirm Password fields.
As you meet each password requirement, the red x marks will turn into green check marks. When you have met all the password requirements, select Continue.
Please follow instructions below. You will just need to indicate that your class is not in person at PSU.

We are excited to welcome you to the 2025 Indigenous First Steps Program!
IFS is a community collaborative program designed to promote culturally specific early learning programs for Native American children in the State of Oregon developed by and for Indigenous and Native American early childhood educators.
The 12-credit Early Childhood Professional Development Certificate integrates Native language, culture, histories, knowledge, and oral stories for recovering and sustaining culture.
Class Format/ Structure
Our classes are considered hybrid as most of the course content will be delivered via PSU Canvas and we will meet by Zoom every second Thursday of the month for a 2-hour meeting.
Term 1 is February 10 through March 22 – please log into Canvas (our online learning platform February 10 or 11, 2025 at canvas.pdx.edu)

Registration
Please check out the registration website for all your registration needs for this program. If you have specific questions, you can reach out to Tatiana Nochevnaya (tatiana9@pdx.edu) for more information and get access to your PSU email account. A PSU email is required for you to access the course website and materials.
Textbooks
We have several texts for class and will be mailing the books directly to you. Please fill in this short form asap to give us your correct mailing address to mail your books. For the first week of class, all materials will be scanned and provided on the Canvas course site in case there are any delays in the books arriving.
Stipends
Stipends are available to all students in the Indigenous First Steps Cohort. Stipends are $300 per month from February through June 2025. Payments are issued in early March (Feb-March), late April (April-May), and end of June (June). Please look for paperwork from Portland State University on stipends in February 2025. You will be required to complete a W-9 form for stipends.
Scholarships
Funders pay for all IFS coursework. Please let valer2@pdx.edu know if you receive any communication from PSU about tuition billing. This sometimes happens after tuition posts and before scholarship dollars are applied.
PSU Technology
Portland State University has a variety of support for you as a student. All students receive access to PSU Google Suites. You can also access free copies of Microsoft Office Suites and other technology supports, including help with setting up tablets and phones. Please let us know if you need to check out technology from the PSU Library. There is more information on Tech resources on the Canvas website.
