In celebration of Speech & Hearing Awareness Month (the month of May), You Are Hear will be featuring weekly videos by special guest teacher, Ms. Kewin. Ms. Kewin is a wonderful music teacher at Agnes Taylor Public School who is also hard of hearing. In May 2019, she participated in the school's "Dress Loud Day" fundraiser to raise awareness about hearing loss and she shared her story with students at Agnes Taylor PS.
This year, she is celebrating the month by creating informative videos to educate Peel students and answer common questions about being hard of hearing. Please check back here every week throughout the month of May to watch new episodes of her fantastic video series. Don't forget to click the closed captioning button ("CC") in the bottom right corner of the viewing screen.
If you have any questions for Ms. Kewin or for one of our student mentors, please visit our "Contact Us" page to submit your question.
This week, Ms. Kewin talks about her assistive devices, demonstrates some basic words in American Sign Language, and answers common questions from her students (including "How and why did you get a hearing loss?" and "Can you still hear without your hearing aids?")... Happy viewing!
This week, Ms. Kewin discusses key terminology, teaches about Deaf culture, and demonstrates a few new words in American Sign Language. Enjoy!
This week, Ms. Kewin explores positive self-talk and self-advocacy, and teaches you how to introduce yourself in ASL. You will get to hear her reasons for celebrating Speech and Hearing Awareness Month, and how and why she is learning ASL! A big 'thanks' from Ms. Kewin to the student and teacher who reached out with these questions.
This week, Ms. Kewin discusses her favourite coping mechanism and provides some advice for being a HOH student, based on her experience. She also talks about the representation of Deaf and HOH kids and teens in the media, and how you can stay connected to the community beyond the month of May!
