I found out I had hearing loss when I was about 4 years old. Since I was so young, I didn't really understand what was happening. I don't exactly remember my reaction but it was definitely a mix of emotions that involved some fear.
As the only child in my immediate family to have hearing loss, it was difficult for my family to accept. However, with the help of my hearing aids and endless support from my audiologist and itinerant teachers, I was able to make awesome friends and excel in school. Being hard of hearing or Deaf can be challenging but remember, you are not alone!
I don’t remember how I reacted because I don't know when or how I lost my hearing in the first place! It is possible that I was born with hearing loss or was born hearing but lost my hearing shortly after birth. It could have been hereditary as both of my parents are Deaf and both of my sisters also have hearing loss. I have many extended family members who also have hearing loss.
I was born in Pakistan and there was not a lot of knowledge about hearing loss at the time, but I have had hearing loss for as long as I can remember. At the age of four, I got my cochlear implant and this changed my life. I was very grateful to have the opportunity to receive a cochlear implant after moving to America.
