Sana & Julia's Perspectives
My life has been significantly easier with hearing aids. I got my hearing aids when I was in kindergarten when teachers and counsellors noticed I was falling behind in class and had difficulty hearing instructions. I was put into a Deaf school to encourage signing and learning alongside other students who are Deaf and hard of hearing. I have always been given a choice about whether or not to use my hearing aids. However, I find them very helpful as they assist me with making sense of things instead of struggling to figure out what a person is saying when he/she does not know sign language.
Hearing aids have helped me to communicate with the hearing people in my family and I feel much more involved and aware with my hearing aids on. I have become much happier and more sociable. Choosing to have hearing aids or not is a personal choice, but I recommend them because I can’t imagine my life without my hearing aids.
This is a very good question to think about and reflect on! I can imagine myself growing up without my hearing aids, however, it would be a challenge because I would have to pay close attention to make sure I understand what is happening. If I don't wear my hearing aids, there is less room for me to be tired or to be nervous about something. Having my hearing aids connected to the FM system really helps me to understand and save time from asking others to repeat what they said (especially in a noisy classroom environment). Although hearing aids are not perfect at cancelling out all background noises, I believe they do make my life easier.
