Advocacy is a tool that helps you stand up for yourself and speak up about what is important for your needs. Advocacy helps with succeeding in school, and also in life outside of school. In Mairah’s opinion, advocacy is something that everyone should be passionate about because it helps students succeed in elementary, middle and high school. During the past three months, she has advocated for her needs in many different classes. Mairah is an excellent advocate, and today she’ll be sharing some ways to increase your confidence and success in school:
If you ever need an extension on any classwork, ask the teacher.
If it's hard to hear or hard to focus because it’s too noisy, ask the teacher or student to talk in the hallway or find a quiet room.
Can’t hear the teacher or a classmate? Ask them to repeat, so you can understand.
Ask a friend or a classmate to borrow their notes to compare with your own so that you can see if you missed anything.
Have a hard time completing your work? Create a due date list!
Create a goal that you want to achieve, and then list out what you need to accomplish the goal. For example, if you want to get better grades, your list could include: study more often, take as many notes as you can, check in with your teachers to make sure you’re on the right track, ask your teacher for practice tests or extra tasks to improve your work.
