What are some accommodations to help with my speech impediment? How can I work around this, on top of being a student who is hard of hearing?

I don't have personal experience with accommodations for a speech impediment, however, I did have a speech therapist called a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) during elementary school to help me with learning how to pronounce certain letter sounds. If accommodations for your speech are needed, your HOH Itinerant Teacher can make a referral at your school for SLP support. I think that the SLP, along with the IEP team, can help set up any additional accommodations needed to support your speech impediment.
Great question! Your school Speech-Language Pathologist can be enlisted to offer you a refresher of strategies to use or a home articulation program. We can also give you some opportunities to role play scenarios where you may need to self-advocate or use alternatives to convey your message. SLPs can also refer you to external agencies and collaborate with your Teaching Team or DHH Itinerant Teacher.
Thank you to special guest, Ms. Kewin, for your thoughtful advice! Ms. Kewin is a Speech and Language Pathologist at Peel District School Board who supports many of the students in our DHH classroom placements.
