Just as you have your teeth checked annually and you go see your doctor every year for a check-up, you should also see your audiologist at least once a year. It is important that the audiologist tests your hearing and checks your middle ears to be sure there are no changes or issues that need to be addressed. Sometimes they can even obtain more or better information about your hearing which helps the audiologist to adjust your hearing aids so that they work better for you. There are many, many adjustments that can be made to your hearing aids. At each visit, new hearing test information and your comments about how your hearing aids are working help the audiologist to better fine tune your hearing aids for each ear.
In addition, ear-molds should be remade every year! Ear-molds get the most wear and tear of your hearing devices but how they fit and how they work over time is very important to how your hearing aids work and how you feel about your hearing aids.
There are often costs involved with some of these appointments and adjustments so your parents need to remember to save a little each month to be able to cover these costs. Sometimes your parents have coverage through work or other agencies but if not, it is best to discuss how much should be saved each month to cover your hearing needs.
Your clinical audiologist can give you better information about costs for hearing tests, ear-molds and new hearing aids. Don’t be afraid to ask! You are the customer and they want to help you. Don’t wait for them to ask you how you feel about your hearing or your hearing aids. Let them know what you like and what you may not like as chances are they can make things better.
A list of questions to ask when you are looking at new hearing aids is also included. Feel free to add your own questions or comments! Audiologists love to know what you think and how to help you hear in all your activities, i.e. at home, at school, in sports, and with friends and family.
