This course introduces students to the Canadian legal systems and allows them to develop a respect for the law and an understanding of its affect on their everyday lives. With a look back at the roots of our Canadian legal traditions students will learn how our current system developed. They will gain an appreciation for basic human rights and how those rights are protected by our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In the Criminal Law unit students will investigate crimes, why they occur and how the courts work. They will have the opportunity to think about issues critically and learn to formulate opinions on some of Canada's most controversial legal issues. Students get the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding through writing, presentations and in mock trials.
