Welcome!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to P5N's class page where you will be able to find out all about the learning taking place within class. Please ensure that you check this page regularly throughout the week for any important class notices and to find out about your child's home learning.

On the timetable tab you can see your child's weekly timetable where you can find the specific days for specialists lessons such as P.E and eventually swimming.

I look forward to a great year ahead with P5N!

Miss Naomi

Home Learning

Spelling - Children will receive a new list of spellings every Sunday. These are to be learnt at home over the week, ready for a spelling test on Thursday. Please support your child to become confident about the meanings of the words too.

Reading - Reading books are sent home weekly. These need to be returned by Thursday or Sunday in order to receive new ones. *Following a reading assessment, your child's reading level has now changed. If you notice that they are finding their new book level extremely challenging please send me an email. I will monitor this in school too.*

Maths Passports- The children should be working on their targets for about 10 minutes a day at home. On the learning portal, there is a link to a fantastic website where they can practise each target. In school, they will be assessed 2 times a week.

Multiplication Tables - by the end of year 4 (Primary 5) children are expected to know all the facts for the multiplication tables from 1-12, including the division facts. In year 4, I will support your child to do this. However, it is also beneficial for them to be practising these regularly at home. https://ttrockstars.com/ is a website that your child should know well. There's also a range of catchy songs on YouTube to help children to learn the tables.

Week Beginning 19.06.22

Chocolate exit point

Thank you so much for coming to our Exit Point today. It was lovely that all of you were able to attend and celebrate the learning that has taken place during this unit. The children said, 'it was the best Exit Point ever'!

maths: Geometry

Geometry is the focus for our Maths this week. Today the children have been learning all about how to classify triangles based on their properties. We made isosceles, equilateral and scalene triangles using a geoboard and elastic bands before creating a WANTED poster for the different triangles.

By the end of our geometry unit, the children should be able to:

  • compare and classify geometric shapes, including quadrilaterals and triangles, based on their properties and sizes

  • identify acute and obtuse angles and compare and order angles up to 2 right angles by size

  • identify lines of symmetry in 2-D shapes presented in different orientations

  • complete a simple symmetric figure with respect to a specific line of symmetry

Week Beginning 05.06.22

maths: statistics

We are now learning all about statistics in P5N. By the end of this unit, the children should be able to:

  • interpret and present discrete and continuous data using appropriate graphical methods, including bar charts and time graphs

  • solve comparison, sum and difference problems using information presented in bar charts, pictograms, tables and other graphs

Today we surveyed the class to find out their favourite novel from the year. They recorded their findings in a tally chart and then created a bar chart to present the data.

IPC

The children are very busy with their preparations for the Exit Point which will take place in the penultimate week of term (more details will be sent in an email soon)! They don't want me to spoil the surprise that they have for you so I will only leave photos as clues.

country presentations

To continue to help the children to develop their speaking and listening skills, the children have been creating a presentation about a country of their choice. We've had some fantastic presentations so far about Canada, India and Iceland to name but a few. Ask your child to show you their slides; I think you'll be impressed!

Library

Library continues to be every Tuesday and we have been enjoying the new library layout and books! Please could you ensure that your child returns their books each week - even if it's just to renew them for another week. Thank you!

Week Beginning 22.05.22

Maths: analogue and digital time

Being able to tell the time is an important life skill. This week, we have been revisiting learning from P4, ensuring that all the children can tell the time on both an analogue clock and digital clock. This is a skill that can be easily reinforced at home using clocks around the house and asking your child to read the time to you. Here is a game (level 3) that can also help: Telling the time

Those children who already know how to tell the time have been trying to solve problems like the one below.

Week Beginning 15.05.22

Maths

This week, P5N have been continuing to develop their knowledge of pounds and pence. They have learnt how to use a variety of methods to add and subtract amounts of money, and they are now using these to solve multi-step problems.

Design and Technology

P5N are working on something special for you as part of their IPC topic, Chocolate. Last week, we analysed different chocolate bar wrapper designs, critiquing their use of colour, font and images. This week the children developed their own skills in graphic writing!

Week Beginning 10.05.22

Welcome back to the final term of P5. It's lovely to see the children back after their holiday.

There will also be an opportunity for the children to buy old library books. They can choose 3 library books for 500 bz!

The Art Competition entries should be handed in to myself no later than this Thursday.

I look forward to a fun-filled day with the children!

Week Beginning 24.04.22

Guided Reading: Palm oil

For guided reading, we have been reading a text called 'Palm Oil: Is it really that bad?' Not only have P5N developed their comprehension skills through this, but they have importantly learnt about the detrimental impact palm oil farming is having on the world. Lots of the class have been busy looking at home for products which contain this ingredient and are going to look out for the RSPO label on foods next time they go shopping with you.

Words of the Week

'Blithely' and 'mortified' are two words which the children have come across this week in their class novel. We have defined them and used them in sentences. Can they tell you the definitions?

Maths: Measure

This week, we are beginning a unit of learning about measure. Through this, the children will learn about money and time.

IPC: Pyramids and Tombs

After a hard few days of assessments, we finished off Tuesday afternoon with some fun! P5N have been learning all about the ancient Egyptian pyramids and the tombs inside of them. They had a go at designing their very own tomb complete with burial chamber, annex, treasury and antechamber. Over the next few weeks, we will be creating 3D pyramids from cardboard and then using our tomb designs to complete the inside of them.

Art

We have nearly finished all of our beautiful bird collages. The children have shown a lot of resilience in creating these - making sure that each piece of their bird was the right size and shape. I think you'll agree that they look amazing!

The great pdo school bake off

As I'm sure you will have read in last Thursday's newsletter, PDO children and families are invited to take part in 'THE GRET PDO SCHOOL BAKE OFF'. The idea is to create a cake at home which is linked to one of the books the children have read so far this year. In P5, we have read 'Leon and the Place Between', 'The Wolves in the Wall', 'How to Train your Dragon' and 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. The cake can be a single cupcake or a full sized family cake! This afternoon, the children have excitedly created some designs for their cakes and I've asked them to come home and share these ideas with you.

The cakes will be judged on Thursday 24th March.

Sports day

Another exciting event for your diaries this month is the PDO School Sports Day which will be held on Wednesday 16th March. Detailed information about this even has been emailed out to all parents.

Week Beginning 27.02.22

Welcome back!

After a week of online learning and the half term holiday, it has been lovely to have the class back in school. Today in Maths, we have been revisiting the fractions learning that we covered whilst online. During IPC, the children learnt about the meaning of chronological order and used this to help them order the ancient Egyptian pharaohs on a timeline. Later in the week, P5N will be learning about the Egyptian afterlife.

Please could any online learning packs be returned to school this week so I can check them.

Science

Calculating the speed of sound

In Science last week we did an experiment to calcualte the speed of sound. We measured 20 metres from a large wall outside and recorded a whistle blast and it's echo using a sound editing application (Audacity).

We found that the echo was 0.125 seconds later than the whistle and so it had taken 1/8th of a second to travel 40m. We therefore calculated that the speed of sound must be 8 x 40 = 320 m/s. Surprisingly close to the generally recognised 340 m/s.

Week Beginning 13.02.22

Online learning

As outlined in the email sent on Saturday night, P5N will be working online for the duration of this week. Please join the Google Meet by entering the code P5N and ensure that your child has their pack which was sent home with them previously. I will start the meeting at 8.30am.

Week Beginning 06.02.22

English

P5s are at an exciting point in our class novel, 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. Aslan is nearer and the children are desperate to find out what will become of Edmund and the White Witch! This week, we have written internal monologues from the point of view of greedy and foolish Edmund in order to explore how he feeling about what he has done. The finished writing has been wonderful to read! You could ask your child to share what they remember with you.

IPC

We are really enjoying learning all about the ancient Egyptians! This week we've tried to use our investigative skills to work out what different artefacts could have been used for and what they might tell us about life in ancient Egypt.

Next week, the children will be learning about significant pharaohs, researching and creating a poster to share their knowledge.

Presentations

To help P5N develop their confidence speaking audibly in front of an audience, they will be giving a short (approximately 3 minutes) presentation about a topic of their choice. Here is the schedule so you can see when your child is presenting. I am encouraging the children to learn their presentation as best as possible so that they do not read from the slides. This has been set as home learning.

Well done to Rayan, Qonita and Pranjal for their lovely presentations today!

Maths

The children have been working hard on their understanding of equivalent fractions this week. They have used bar models and fraction walls to help them to do this and have now begun to use their knowledge of multiplication and division to solve questions like the one opposite.

Week Beginning 30.01.22

Learning Packs

We have sent a plastic folder containing exercise books and stationery home with your child. This is so that in the event of suddenly switching to online learning, the children have the resources that they need at home. Please keep it in a safe place and fingers crossed, it isn't needed.

PE

Please note that for this week only, P5N will have an extra PE lesson this Tuesday so please ensure that your child wears their PE kit to school. Thank you.

English

Today, the children planned the events leading up to Mr Tumnus' arrest in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They then acted out these plans which allowed them to rehearse the sentences which they will use in their writing tomorrow. It was great to hear them use the idioms that they learnt about last week, including 'Great Scott' and 'It was a piece of cake'.

Week Beginning 23.01.22

Class parent: If anyone would like to be the P5N class mum or dad please send me an email on nmilner@pdoschool.com. I promise that it will not be a heavy workload!

Wellbeing

The children are enjoying sitting with a socially distanced table partner. Each week they will have a new partner to learn with which will enable them to get to know their classmates better and respect them for their own unique qualities. Every Thursday, we take time to reflect on what we have enjoyed about working with our partners. We then share these thoughts with one another during circle time.

Maths

We ended last week, with some challenging but fun problem solving. I was extremely impressed with how the children worked together and used their mathematical thinking to find solutions. Here are some of the challenges we used: Build it Up! and Maze 100.

Having now completed our unit of addition and subtraction, the children will begin to further develop their knowledge and skills in multiplication and division. To get an overview of the objectives for this, please have a look at this website. You can support your child with their multiplication and division by regularly practising the multiplication tables at home.
