FAREWELL P4H

Wow, I can't believe it is the end of the year. It seems to have flown by! We have had such an exciting learning journey together. You have shown all of the personal goals particularly resilience and adaptability during our home learning sessions and also been so kind, cooperative and most of all....fun! It has been such a pleasure to teach you, you are an AMAZING class. Also, a huge thank you to all the parents who have supported your child and me this year. Wishing you all a fabulous and safe summer. From, Ms Hayley.

Wishing Elnathan and Mia all the best with their move to their new school. Keep in touch please! We will miss you.

Term 3 Week 9

Island Life Exit Point

What an incredible exit point, P4H!

We enjoyed sharing our fabric designs and sunset pictures, challenging parents to drawing a world map from memory and demonstrating our map skills. Mr Gary prepared the children for their magnificent musical performance called 'Tamboo Bamboo'.

Thank you to all the parents who attended our final exit point of the year.

Art Day

We linked our Art Day to our unit Island Life.

We looked at examples of sunset pictures and then we practised using the mediums of chalk and oil pastels to blend colours. Using the examples as inspiration we created a sunset picture using our choice of media and then added silhouettes in black pen or oil pastel.

Term 3 Week 8

Going for Gold!

A big congratulations to our international football superstar - Sebastian!

We loved hearing all about your football tournament in Italy in your Show and Tell.

Shape Poems - Today, we analysed lots of different shape poems to identify features such as similes, alliteration, onomatopoeia, powerful verbs, rhyme etc. Then we used thesaurus' to find lots of adventurous words to describe Mary Poppins and presented them in ways to represent her eg an umbrella and her magical carpet bag. Tomorrow, we will use these words to write descriptive phrases to form our shape poems.

Term 3 Week 7

Telling the time: We are learning to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes using analogue and digital clocks. We are also learning to solve time duration problems eg if the film starts at 3:15 and finishes at 4.45, how long does the film last for?

Please practise this important life skill at home with your child. There is a link below to some time games.

How many clocks can you find in your house? What time do you get up? What time do you go to bed? How long are you at school for? Watch a programme and work out how long it was on for.

Literacy: Each week, in our vocabulary lessons we investigate new words by looking them up in a dictionary. We also use thesaurus' to find antonyms and synonyms and play games to consolidate our learning in a fun way. We love playing the word association game. Ask your child how to play it and have a go with them!

This week, we finished writing our diary entries based on the characters in Mary Poppins. We then had to swap books and peer assess our friend's work. This is an important skill to help edit and improve our work.

Show and Tell

Thank you Arya for telling us all about the Dubai Expo.

Term 3 Week 6

Show and Tell

Thank you Nazym for sharing your love of dogs with us this afternoon. Queen Elizabeth even made an appearance to coincide with her Platinum Jubilee!!

MARY POPPINS

I am so so excited to be reading Mary Poppins as our new class text as it is one of my childhood favourites! This week, we have read the first four chapters.

Questions to ask your child could be; where and when is the story set, what characters we have been introduced to, who is their favourite character and why, what has happened in the story so far, what do they think might happen next?

Measure: Capacity and Volume

We have looked at the scales / intervals that might be found on beakers, measuring jugs and measuring cylinders. We had to identify what each 'line' or interval went up in, in order to work out the volume. We also estimated and then read the volume in different sized containers.

This is a skill that you could practice at home as well. Use a measuring jug and measure out certain amounts of liquid. Also you could estimate the amount of liquid in different containers in the kitchen and then read what the volume is. You could follow a recipe to make a milkshake.

IPC : Children had to research an island and then present their findings to the class.

They had fun locating the islands using globes, google earth and atlases.

Malta

Galapagos

Borneo

Reunion Islands

Tresco

Komodo Island

Manitoulin Island

Tioman Island

Hawaii

Term 3 Week 5

Leo's Lego Show and Tell

Thank you Leo for sharing your love of Lego with us this afternoon.

My Dad

In Guided Reading, we are reading our third book by Anthony Browne. First, we made predictions about the story then we discussed the similarities and the differences of the dads from all three books.

Which was book was your favourite and why?

MEASURES

In Maths, we have studied measuring length and mass and finding the perimeter of 2D shapes.

How many different measuring tools can you find in your house?

Reading scales at home would be a great way to practise this important skill. Why not measure out ingredients with your child and make a cake or a milkshake, measure how much water fills a bucket, measure the perimeter of a table or bedroom?

IPC - Island Life

We are using our research skills to find out the geographical features of islands around the world. These features include information about the location, climate, human and physical features, biomes, vegetation belts and topographical features. We will present our findings to the rest of the class next week.

Term 3 Week 3- Welcome back after the Eid holiday!

World Book Day

P4H, you all looked amazing in your outfits for World Book Day. We had fun talking about our favourite books, drawing book characters and taking part in a Phase 2 costume parade.

Congratulations to Leo, Nazym and Ella who were awarded with certificates and prizes today.

Measuring length

This week we have been practising measuring accurately using rulers, metre sticks and trundle wheels. We will also look at converting units of measurement. For example, how many centimetres is 2m 38cm? How many mm is 5cm?

Please help your child to practise this skill at home eg measure the length of the driveway, the width of the bedroom, the height of the front door, the length of a book etc or click on the link to play the game.

STORY WRITING

We are planning a story based on a dream an orangutan has about being set free into the rainforests and being reunited with his family after enduring years in captivity. Please ask your child about their and get them to retell it to you.

Welcome to TERM 3!

GORILLA

This week, we started reading another book by Anthony Browne called 'Gorilla'. We looked at the front cover and made predictions about what might happen.

ISLAND LIFE

We have started our final IPC topic, Island Life. Thank you to those who brought in different fabrics from islands around the world.

In the Entry Point, we discussed what we would need to survive if we were shipwrecked on a desert island. We also had to use our personal qualities to solve a challenge and get from one island to another avoiding the shark infested waters!

As part of our Oman unit in IPC, we have been researching the location, flora and fauna in the Dhofar region. We have been using the chromebooks to find information to place on Google Slides. In the process, we have learnt many new IT skills such as pasting a picture, adding text and lines as well as thinking about the presentation of the slides.

Maths

We have learnt the method for formal column addition.

We learnt that you start on the RIGHT hand column and work left.

We moved through the differentiated steps of no bridging, bridging ones, bridging tens and then bridging ten and ones.

Some of us moved onto word problems and logic and reasoning. We had to use the formal column ethod and check our answers.

English

In Guided Reading, we have been practicing our skimming and scanning skills to help retrieve information from a text.

We have also been playing detective and developing our inference skills to dig deeper and find the clues to work out hidden information.

Please read these websites which explain these important skills in more depth and they also have some activities you can complete with your child.

Week 12 - Wishing everybody a happy and safe long weekend. See you all on Tuesday!

Farewell

Today we said goodbye to our friend, Samiq. We will miss him so much but wish him and his family all the very best in their next adventure.

Maths

Continuing our topic on addition, we have now moved onto using the expanded method. We have used this method to bridge ones and tens using 3 digit numbers. Ask your child to explain how they would work out the following questions:

125 + 134 = 234 + 147= 138 + 281 = 289 + 235 =

English

We have edited and improved our character descriptions to ensure our work includes similes, adventurous adjectives, a range of sentence starters, conjunctions and correct punctuation. Using our best, joined up handwriting, we have published our work for our class display.

IPC

This week saw P4 using all of the skills we have been learning over the last few weeks to create our final art masterpieces - our Omani doors. They will soon be displayed outside our classroom for people to admire!

Show & Tell

Hattie amazed us with her interesting and informative Show and Tell today which was based on How To Train Your Dragon. The surprise at the end of her presentation was a Tweet from the author, Cressida Powell!!!! Well done, Hattie!

Week 11

Happy National Day! Thank you to all parents and children for making so much effort to dress up in traditional dress or the colours of the Omani flag. We had a wonderful day doing lots of different activities to celebrate.

IPC

Earlier this week, we visited our PDO School Omani Museum. We had fun finding out the names and purpose of lots of traditional Omani objects.

Maths

We have been learning a new strategy to add two 2 or 3 digits numbers. By partitioning the second number we can then add the hundreds, tens and ones separately. Some of us have been using the inverse to check our calculations.

We used the same strategy for subtraction as well.

This strategy can be used for any number of digits.

We also looked at more efficient strategies i.e. for adding 9. By adding 10 and taking 1 away it is much quicker. We also applied this to other numbers i.e. + 79, we can add 80 and take 1 away.

For subtraction we can follow the same strategy; to take away 9 we can take away 10 + 1

You can use this strategy at home to try these calculations.

56 + 45 = 74 - 47 =

134 + 69 = 156 - 89=

376 + 189 = 437 - 249=

English

We have been using a thesaurus to find adjectives to describe Miss Hardbroom. Next week, we will be writing a character description. Ask your child to describe her appearance and personality. You could even watch some of 'The Worst Witch' episodes and discuss more of the characters.

Week 10

IPC: Oman

We studied the beautiful designs and colours used to decorate Omani doors and used them as inspiration to sketch our own.

Maths

We have continued to work on numbers this week in Maths and have been increasing the number of digits we add and subtract from a 3 digit number. We are still reinforcing the use of prior strategies such as number bonds, partitioning and using number lines to help solve the problems. Here is a website you can use to look at the different strategies for mental maths.

Adventurous adjectives

Using a thesaurus has helped us to find lots more interesting and adventurous adjectives to describe characters such as The Twits, The BFG and The Big Bad Wolf. Next week, we will be writing character descriptions based on the book The Worst Witch.

Week 9

Science

We have been learning about the common names of the bones in the skeleton. First of all, we drew what we thought a skeleton looked like.

Mr Bones

Mr Bones then helped us name all the major bones in the skeleton and annotate a diagram. He was very impressed with our learning!

IPC

We have been experimenting with watercolours to create a water themed display. We added salt onto the damp watercolour to create more texture. The salt chases away the pigment to make lighter areas beneath. Finally, we drew our turtles in pencil then in pen. Our paintings will be displayed in the school foyer and will highlight the importance of protecting the endangered species of sea turtles in Oman.

Maths

We have been adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers and 1 digit numbers using bridging 10. Here is a short video explaining the strategy with smaller numbers. Knowing our number bonds to 10 with rapid recall has really helped with this. Please continue to practice these with your child.

English

We have been reading more of our class book, The Worst Witch. In our Writing, we have been focussing on capital letters, full stops, commas, prepositions and conjunctions.

Week 8

Hello everyone! It is great to finally be in Oman and join the team at PDO School. It has been a busy first week getting to know your children and I can already tell they are a fabulous class! We are going to have an amazing year in P4H!

A huge thank you to Ms Liz for all her hard work in the first half term and a warm welcome to Hamzah and his family who have joined us this week.

I am looking forward to meeting you all very soon. In the meantime, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me.

Kind regards, Miss Hayley

Maths - adding and subtracting 10 /100

We have been learning how to add and subtract 10, including how to cross over into the hundreds. We had to use our knowledge of place value to help us. We discovered some mathematical patterns when counting forwards and backwards in 10's and also noticed that the ones always stay the same.

You could practice this at home and see how far your child can count up to.

IPC

This week in IPC, we started our unit all about OMAN. In Geography, we have used maps to locate Oman and describe it's location and also name the 11 Governorates.

In Art, we have started our ocean themed display which will focus on the importance of protecting the endangered species of sea turtles in Oman.

English

We have looked at the opening of the story The Iron Man by Ted Hughes this week as we explore story setting. We have discovered some new vocabulary

English - character descriptions

We watched the trailer for the cartoon 'The Night Zookeeper'. We answered questions about the characters. We looked at the observable and non observable (personality) characteristics of the characters. Then we drew our own new character and wrote a description.

Could you make up another character, draw a picture and write a description?

Timestable rockstars

The children will be bringing home a letter with their log in details for Timetable Rockstars. This is an online platform that is useful to help the children learn their multiplication tables and division facts. The children will be set specific tables AFTER the half term holidays based on their Maths Passport targets they need to learn. However, during the holiday they can choose which games they play. The 'Jamming' game allows them to choose 1 specific table to practice.

English - adverbs

We identified adverbs within sentences - many of them end in the suffix -ly. We found that adverbs can show us HOW, WHEN, WHERE or WHY. We discussed adverbs of MANNER and TIME.

a recount of the cyclone

We discussed sensory language that could be used in the recount and made a list. We began our diary entry with when, what and where. We described the cyclone and how we felt about what had happened. We read our diary entries aloud, which helped us edit our work.

Maths - writing numbers in different ways

To help understand place value we learnt that numbers can be written in different ways. We used diennes to help us understand.

We set out our learning in a logical way so we could make sure we had all the possible answers.

Here are some of the general learning activities used at PDO School.

Note the Factors Challenge! Winners will be published in the next Newsletter.

English - writing a letter

We planned the letter to write to the man who wanted to cut down the Kapok Tree. We decided which animals we would be writing as. We looked at the reasons why the tree should not be cut down and used different persuasive devices. As a class we looked out how a letter should be set out correctly.

New weekly spellings sheet

Your child will return from school today with a newly formatted spelling sheet. On the back there is now a section to complete a vocabularly task for two of the spellings from each week. Pupils should select the two spellings that they are least confident with and complete the tasks as outlined on the back. I have also uploaded the sheet below.

Weekly spellings in context.pdf

Music

Using well known melodies, children have been learning basic keyboard skills. All resources used in class are on the Music website.

IPC: using chromebooks to research

We used the Chromebooks to research which products can be found in the rainforest. We also used pictures as a source.

We identified what we already knew about the products from the rainforest.

We researched using the websites on the Learning Portal and recorded our findings.

English

What are the features of a letter?

We discussed the features of a letter as a class. We also discussed the idea that emails are very similar to letters, however, some of the features are different.

Annotating a text

We annotated the letter with the main features. We will use this when we write our own letters.

maths passport

We are practising our Maths Passport targets every day. We look at strategies that can be used and we are trying to get faster!

maths

We investigated place value this week. We looked at the largest and smallest numbers we could make from digit cards. We also investigated a logical way to find all possible 3 digit numbers combinations from 3 and 4 digit cards.

The Great Kapok Tree

Here is a copy of the book 'The Great Kapok Tree'. Please click the video for the text and story being read aloud.

maths- place value

This week we are continuing our learning on place value, revisiting 2 digit numbers and moving onto 3 digit numbers. Today we looked at different ways of representing numbers including visually. We had to take a number and show the value of each digit, draw the number using diennes or counters, write a partition calculation and draw a whole / part model. We also wrote the number on words.

maths

This week we have been revising counting in 100's, 50's, 4's and 8's. We learnt to fill in missing number sequences by identifying the jumps as well as using BIKIAK (Because I Know I Also Know) to count in 40's and 80's. The children have been reintroduced o the 'spice' levels and have also been solving word and logic / reasoning problems.

art

We began our Art lessons this week. We looked closely at a picture of a rainforest and learnt about the artist. We learnt how to sketch and shade from darker to light.

English - Direct Speech

We looked at speech verbs and how they can give us a clue about how the character is speaking.

We thought about the animals in 'The Great Kapok Tree' and looked at the speech verbs used.

As a class we thought of speech verbs for Miss Liz's cat, Jasper. Then we thought of what he might say and wrote it as direct speech using the correct punctuation.

We then did the same for other animal characters within the story.

Reading Books

There have been many requests for reading books to be kept at home and returned on a Sunday. The P4 teachers are happy to facilitate this request.

Spelling sheets

Spelling sheets should be returned on a Thursday. The children will complete the THURSDAY part of the 'Look, Cover, Write and Check' when they arrive at school on a Thursday morning.

Welcome!

Welcome to a new school year.

It is wonderful to have the children back in class. We will be posting routines and learning the children have completed here from next week.

Miss Hayley is not in country at the moment, hopefully she will join us very soon. In the meantime myself (Miss Liz) and Miss Zoe will be teaching the class P4HL.
