P3B had a super morning today, for their Oman Exit point where they used some of the skills they had used in IPC this term as well as learning new facts about Oman. They had the chance to learn today with all of the teachers in Phase 1.

English - Week 15 writing a Setting Description

This week in English, P3B have been designing their own setting and then describing it using expanded noun phrases. The children have shown their creative flair and ideas in their writing and also their speaking and listening this week.

MaThs - week 15

Subtracting two 2 -digit numbers

This week in Maths, P3B have been learning how to subtract a two 2-digit number from a 2 - digit number. To help them to do this, the children made both the numbers with dienes to support them and exchanging a ten for 10 ones to support their understanding when crossing a ten. They have also been using their knowledge of tens and ones to subtract the tens and then the ones digit on a number line and also a hundred square.

The children are also continuing to check their answers are correct by using the inverse.

Music

Well despite missing Music for a year and a half, the children of P3 have been producing some very good work in lessons this term. We have also been looking at the importance of listening, following instructions on a graphic score, concentration, focus and controlled motor skills. As part of the Oman project for this term, children have been learning to compose their own rhythms, structure and perform using polyrhythms. Using a variety of instruments, they have expanding their knowledge and skills to accompany an Omani March.

Week 14 - Science

This week in Science, P3B have been learning about the characteristics of different types of animals and how to classify animals.

English - Week 14 writing noun phrases and adding describing words to make their writing more interesting

This week in English, P3B have been improving sentences by adding describing words. They have also started to use a Thesaurus to help them to find synonyms to improve their vocabulary.

The children have also identified noun phrases from a picture and then added describing words to make the noun phrases more interesting. They will use this knowledge to write a setting description.

MaThs - week 14

Adding two 2 -digit numbers

This week in Maths, P3B have been learning how to add two 2-digit numbers together. To help them to do this, the children made both the numbers with dienes to support them to count. They have also been using their knowledge of tens and ones to add the tens and then the ones digit on a number line and also a hundred square.

English - Week 13 Writing a setting description

This week in English, P3B have been describing the setting at the beginning and end of our text, The Tin Forest. First, they identified nouns in the picture and wrote noun phrases, then they made expanded noun phrases by adding adjectives. They also created a word bank of doing / action words, (verbs) to describe what the animals and plants are doing in the picture to make their writing more interesting. They produced some super writing today. Well done.

MaThs - week 13

Using the inverse to find missing numbers

In maths this week, the children have been using the inverse to help them to solve missing number sentences. Here are some examples if you would like to practise these at home with your child.

MaThs - week 12

Subtracting by partitioning to the previous ten

This week in Maths, P3B have been using a mental strategy to support their mental subtraction skills. They have been using their prior knowledge of number bonds to ten and number bonds within ten to subtract a one digit number from a two digit number. They have also identified the previous multiple of ten 10 to help them. The children used dienes to physically see how to subtract by exchanging a tens diene for 10 ones and then subtracting the ones to make the previous ten and then to subtract the remaining amount. They have also used a number line to support them to subtract by partitioning.

English Week 12

This week in English the children have been learning to use commas in lists. For example, I like orange, blue and green. I don't like pizza, broccoli or apples.

We have also started to read a new story this week called, The Tin Forest by Helen Ward. The children made really thoughtful predictions about what might happen in the text based on what happens and by also using their previous knowledge of stories to help them.

The class have also written sentences to retell the main events in the story using the past tense, time words and adjectives. Maybe your child could tell you all about the story.

Here is a link to a video of the story.

The children really enjoyed looking at the books today and listening to Ms Zoe telling them a story.

PDO school Library reopens to the children

Every Wednesday, you child will be able to visit PDO School Library. To start, the children are allowed to take one book home. They must return their book the following Wednesday in order to be able to take another book out.

Please ensure the children bring in their red library bag every Wednesday.

MaThs - week 11

Adding 3 one digit numbers

This week in maths, P3B have been looking at different mental strategies to help them to add 3 one digit numbers.

1) By making number bonds to 10 and adding the remaining number.

For example, 3+ 6+ 4= 13. First, add the 6 and the 4 to make 10 and then add the 3 to make 13.

2) By using their knowledge of doubles.

For example, 3 + 6 + 6 = 15. First add the 6's by doubling = 12 and then add the 3 to make 15.

3) By adding the smaller numbers together first.

For example 7+4 +5 = 16. 4+5 = 9 and then add the 7 to make 16.

For maths passport this week, the children have been playing games to help them to learn doubles for all numbers up to 20.

Please can you help your child to recall these doubles at home.

beautiful oman

In IPC this week the children have been learning about the architecture and artifacts of Oman. This week we looked at the khanjar and its uses. The children followed up their learning by making a black and white observational drawing of a khanjar and also traditional Omani jewellery. Their amazing work will be displayed in the PDO School Omani Museum soon.

Dear parents,

Please be reminded that if the children are unable to attend their swimming lesson, they are required to remain at home for the day. The only exception would be if they are exempt by a PDO doctor for a medical reason such as an ear infection or other medical reasons as decided by the doctor.

Thank you so much for your support and understanding.

English - Week 10

Writing noun phrases

This week in English, the children have revisited nouns and adjectives in order to know what a noun phrase is and that we can add adjectives to make the noun phrase more interesting for the reader. We read the book, Big, Green Monster and identified the nouns and adjectives used to describe him in the story. Today, the class created their own monster and thought of interesting adjectives to describe the parts of his head. Next week, the children will use this to write a detailed description of their monster using adjectives and nouns. They will .also see how we can use commas in lists.

MaThs - week 10

Adding by partitioning to the next ten

This week in Maths, P3B have been using a mental strategy to support their mental addition skills. They have been using their prior knowledge of number bonds to ten and number bonds within ten to add a one digit number to a two digit number. They have also learned what multiples of ten are to help them to identify the next ten. The children used dienes to physically see how to add part of the number to make another ten and then add the rest of the number. They also used a number line to support them to jump to the next ten by partitioning the number and then adding the rest.

Next week, the children will continue to use this strategy to support them to add 3 1 digit numbers by finding the multiples of 10.

IPC week 10

This week in IPC, P3B have been learning about Nizwa Fort and learning to make an observational drawing by looking at shapes and angles to support their drawings.

They have also looked at shading using the side of a pencil crayon and shading away from the line in the same direction.

Maths week 9

This week in Maths, the children have been finding missing numbers in addition number sentences by using a subtraction number sentence and then checking it.

English Week 9

The children have been learning the features of a diary entry this week in order to write a diary entry from the viewpoint of farmer Bean in the story.

Week 9 - IPC - Visiting PDO school's Omani Museum

The children really enjoyed looking at and learning about the artefacts.

They had a chance to ask questions about artefacts that interested them.

Week 8- A new half term!

The children have settled back into a new half term really well. This week, the children discussed and wrote a recount about something they did in their holiday in English. In maths, we have been practicing adding and subtracting mentally within 10 and 20 and we have started to look at the relationship between addition and subtraction. The children will continue to use this knowledge next week to check their calculations using the inverse and to help them to find missing numbers.

The children have completed a few assessments this week and they have worked really hard, using all of their personal skills especially resilience to carry on when they find something tricky. Well done.

IPC - Beautiful Oman

This week, the children have been sharing their knowledge about Oman for our new IPC topic this term. They all talked and wrote about something they have done or a place they have visited in this amazing country. They also shared their knowledge of Oman through drawings.

The children really enjoyed sharing what they know about Oman and they listened really well to each other.

Next week, the children will have an opportunity to visit an Omani Souq for their Entry Point as well as visit an Omani museum that has been set up in school.

Dear parents,

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the first half of this term. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support over the course of the last few weeks.

After the mid-term holiday, the children will be finding out more about Oman as part of their IPC learning. For the Knowledge Harvest, we would like the children to share a picture of any experience that they have had in Oman. This could be an interesting place that they have visited such as Mutrah souq, Jabal Akhdar, or any interesting site in and around Muscat. We would appreciate it if you could send this in on the first day after the holiday so that we can prepare the lesson for the children.

We hope that you have a very restful holiday and look forward to seeing all the children back after the holiday.

Regards,

Miss Becky

Just as a fun activity to end our IPC unit on Treasure Islands, the children completed a treasure hunt around school. I know they had fun. Have a lovely week's holiday.

IPC - end of unit

Maths - Week 7

Addition and Subtraction

This week in Maths, the children are learning or using their recall of number facts to 20 to help them to solve addition and subtraction calculations and to see the patterns. Some children have been using cubes to help them to solve missing numbers and subtraction problems using the bar model to help them, others are using this knowledge to support them to complete calculations up to 100 and to solve word problems, ensuring they have the correct answer.

We have also introduced the inverse to support children to check they have the correct answer.

English -week 7

In English this week, the children are revising their knowledge of nouns and looking at using a capital letter for names. They have been practising forming their capital letters and ensuring proper nouns ( names) are spelt with a capital letter using common cat and Proper Pete to help them.

The children will use this knowledge to ensure names of people, places, days, months and seasons are spelt with a capital letters in their independent writing.

IPC - Geography Week 5

In IPC today, we talked about the cyclone and looked at different types of weather including extreme weather such as cyclones and tornadoes.

English -week 6

Today in English, P3B acted in character as Mr Fox to develop their inference skills by asking and answering questions. They interviewed Mr Fox, imagining how he would answer the questions.

Maths - place VALUE

Week 5

In maths this week, the children have continued to look at place value by representing numbers in different ways, including words.

Maths Passport

The children have been practising counting in different steps over the last 2 weeks.

  • counting in multiples of ten

  • counting in tens from any number

  • counting in 5's

  • counting in 2's

  • counting in 3's

Please can you practice these targets at home with your child to help them to recall these facts.

Music

In P3, children have continued to improve their knowledge from work done in P2 and developed their ability to perform pieces on the glockenspiel. They are also beginning to read basic notation.

Art - week 5

This week in Art, the children practised the skills previously taught- using different brushstrokes and mixing primary colours - whilst focusing on painting within the lines.

The children really enjoyed this task. As we have been learning about the oceans in IPC, the children practised their accuracy to paint within the lines of different sea creatures.

English -week 5

In English this week, the children created some freeze frames from the story Fantastic Mr Fox to support their understanding.

We read chapter 3 and the children pretended to be Mr Fox coming out of his den and the 3 farmers waiting to shoot him for stealing their animals.

The children will then use these photos to create thought bubbles for the characters where they will write sentences using question marks, exclamation marks or full stops.

IPC - Geography Week 5

This week in IPC, the children are continuing to develop their understanding of the world and how to use an Atlas, to find and name the 5 Oceans.

They also watched this video to help them to learn the names of the oceans. Can you your child find the continents and the oceans on an Atlas at home and also learn how to say them in their home language?

Art - week 4

This week in Art, the children learned how to hold and load a paintbrush correctly. They practiced different brush strokes and the focus was on accuracy.

The children will use this skill to create different brushstrokes on a painting later in the term. They will combine this with their knowledge of colour mixing to create secondary colours.

English -week 4

Writing a character description

This week in English, P3 have continued to learn about adjectives. They read some more of the story, Fantastic Mr Fox and identified the adjectives used to describe him in the story. They also answered the following questions:

  • Where does he live?

  • Who does he live with?

  • What does he look like?

  • What does he do and why ?

  • What do the farmers think about him?

They used their retrieval and inference skills to answer these questions.

The children used this information as well as thinking of their own adjectives to describe Mr Fox, in order to write a description of him.

Tomorrow, the children will edit their writing.

Maths - place VALUE

Week 4

In maths this week, the children are consolidating their knowledge of tens and ones, to prove using mathematical language how they know a number is greater than, equal to or less than another number.

We have revisited the- greater than > less than < and = equal to - symbols to compare numbers up to 120.

The children are also using this knowledge to order numbers up to 120 and to solve reasoning problems.

Science - Week 4

P3's have started a Science topic this week called, Humans and other Animals. The children have learned the word offspring and they have been matching the names and pictures of animals to their offspring.

I would love the children to investigate these at home in their home languages too.

English - Week 3

This week in English, we have started to read the story Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl. We will use this as our class text for the next few weeks.

So far we have been looking at the adjectives used to describe the three farmers at the start of the story. We have focused on adjectives that describe their size and personality.

From this, we made a word bank and the children used the word bank to support them to write a description of one of the farmers.

We will continue to identify and use adjectives next week.

IPC - Geography

As part of our IPC topic , Treasure Islands, this week, P3B have been locating their home country or somewhere important to them on Google Earth and in an Atlas. The children have also identified, located and named the 7 continents.

At home, why not explore places together on Google Earth with your child or look for continents and places in an Atlas?

Link to Google Earth

Maths - place VALUE

Week 3

This week in Maths, the children have been learning about place value in two digit numbers. They have been using arrow cards and dienes to:

  • make two digit numbers

  • identify how many tens and ones are in two digit numbers

  • identify the value of each digit

  • partition numbers in different ways using multiples of ten

  • count in tens from any number

Here is an example for the number 55.

5 tens and 5 ones 50 +5 = 55

55 = 50 + 5

55 = 40 + 15

55 = 30 + 25

55 = 20 + 35

55 = 10 + 45

Some of the children have also started to write two digit numbers in words.

P3B have been mixing paints today and learning about primary and secondary colours.

They identified the primary colours, red, yellow and blue and then mixed them together to make the secondary colours, orange, green and purple. They recorded this on a colour wheel.

They will use this knowledge later in the week to mix paint colours and create a painting based on the the story, the Dot.

As you can see, the children really enjoyed this task. Well done!

Pirates Ahoy!

As an entry point for our new IPC topic, Treasure Islands, P3 dressed up as pirates and completed some pirate themed tasks on Thursday.

The children drew and described their own pirates. They also practiced their necessary mathematical skills to count their treasure (booty) using their knowledge of addition and subtraction.

Shiver Me Timbers

Shiver Me Timbers, what great costumes P3B!
