(FEBRUARY 27, 2026) The City of Portland has a new home sharing program. The program starts in February 2026. It will run for 12 months. The idea is to help people find cheaper places to live and help homeowners use empty rooms in their houses.
Homeowners can join the program if they rent a room in their home. The room must be shared with a tenant. The city says this can help people who need affordable housing.
If a homeowner rents a room for at least 30 days, they may get money from the city. They can get $1,000 for the first room and $500 for each extra room. The rent must be no more than $200 per week, and must include utilities like water and electricity.
Homeowners must use one of the approved providers. These groups help find renters and support both the homeowner and tenant during the stay.
Also, there will be classes starting in March. The classes will help homeowners learn the rental rules and how to share their home with someone new.
City leaders say this program can help people who need a place to live and help homeowners earn extra money.
