(FEBRUARY 6, 2026) Oregon leaders have a new plan. It is a law for computer programs called AI chatbots. Many people use these programs to talk and ask questions.
The law wants to keep children safe. Some parents say their children died because of chatbots. One girl in Colorado talked to a chatbot 55 times about her sad feelings. The parents say the computer did not help her.
The new Oregon law says:
The computer must say: "I am not a human".
If a person is very sad, the computer must give a help phone number.
The computer cannot talk about sex with children.
The computer must tell kids to take a break every hour.
The computer cannot say "Please don't leave me" to make kids stay online.
Lisa Reynolds is a state lawmaker. She says we must protect kids now. Some computer companies say they want to be safe, too. But some leaders in the U.S. government do not like the state laws. They think laws might stop new ideas.
