(NOVEMBER 21, 2025) Mercy Flights in Medford has started a new emergency medical service for working dogs. These dogs work with police, fire crews, and search-and-rescue teams. The new rules began in October 2025.
Before this change, there was no clear way to help an injured working dog in the field. Now, Mercy Flights EMS crews can give first aid and take injured dogs to a vet if needed.
Philip Reid is Ground Operations Manager. He said the training for dogs is similar to training for people. EMS crews can use the same tools and medicines, but they change the amount to make it safe for dogs.
The Medford Fire Department and Mercy Flights’ medical director helped create the new plan. They also trained workers during 2025. This year, 49 Mercy Flights staff completed the special training.
If a dog needs more care, Mercy Flights will take it to the Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center in Central Point. The new service is only for dogs that are working in public safety.
Reid said the goal is to “bridge the gaps in healthcare” and make sure both people and canines get the help they need during emergencies.
