(OCTOBER 17, 2025) Some Oregon farmers grow wheat. The wheat is for bread, noodles, and other food. Most Oregon wheat goes to other countries. For example, wheat from Oregon goes to The Philippines and South Korea.
Now, farmers have money problems. The price of wheat is low. The cost of farming is high. Many farmers lose money.
Why? President Trump made new rules about business with other countries. He made new tariffs. A tariff is like a tax. Now there are more tariffs on wheat. The tariffs make the wheat more expensive. So other countries buy less wheat. Then the price goes down. Farmers make less money.
The president says he might give money to help farmers. But many farmers say they do not want money from the government. They want to sell their wheat for a good price.
Many farmers keep their wheat. They wait for a better price. Other farmers might get help from the government. But no one knows when or how.
Amanda Hoey says, “We want markets, not payments. But some farmers need help to stay on their farms.”
Many farmers worry about the future. Some sell their land. They stop farming.
