(AUGUST 4, 2025) Mary Lou Hennrich wants more people to ride the bus. She says it’s easy, safe, and fun.
In the Mount Tabor neighborhood, Mary Lou and about 15 neighbors meet each month at a bus stop. They call their trip “Tabor to Town.” They ride Line 15 together to visit Downtown Portland and support local businesses.
The idea came after Portland’s mayor, Keith Wilson, gave a speech in May 2025. He encouraged people to use public transport to help the city.
Most people in the group are older and didn’t ride much before, but now they enjoy it. “This is really fun,” many say.
In June, the group went to Midtown Beer Garden and met neighbor Matt Allen, who helps manage it. Even Mayor Wilson joined them to show support.
Mary Lou hopes other neighborhoods—like Sellwood and Irvington—will do the same. “We need to support Downtown,” she says.
TriMet helps people save money on gas and parking. Buses come often, and MAX trains go to many places. You can plan your trip at trimet.org.
TriMet is also working to make rides safer and cleaner. Riders can call 503-238-RIDE or scan a QR code to give feedback.
Mary Lou says taking the bus helps you enjoy the city and meet your neighbors. “Get out and talk to people,” she says.
