Eugene wants new rules for dogs in parks

(AUGUST 4, 2025) Eugene is a city in Oregon. It wants to make new rules for dogs in parks. 

Now, dogs must be on a leash. The dogs must be with their owner. Owners cannot tie dogs to trees if it hurts the plants.

New rules say owners must always hold the leash in their hand. They cannot tie dogs to anything in the park. The city says this will make parks safer.

Some people do not like the new rules. Some people say it will make life harder for homeless people with dogs. For example, they can’t clean up their area if they always have to hold the dog leash.

The new rules also say:

• • • No bikes or scooters on small walking paths

    • No washing in fountains

    • No walking or sitting on plants (except grass)

    • No boats in two ponds, unless it is a special event

The city is reading comments from the public now. Then the City Manager will decide what to do.
