(MAY 29, 2025) Are people in Oregon young? Or are they old?
In 1985, there were more children than seniors.
Now there are more seniors than children. Only 1 in 5 Oregonians is under 18 years old.
Why?
People moved to Oregon in the 1970s and 1980s. They stayed. They got older.
Housing costs are higher. Then people have fewer families.
There is less diversity in education and culture. White families have fewer children. People with education have fewer children.
"We are an aging population" says Carl Riccadonna. He works for the state. He studies the economy.
The state will change. For example, people will need more services for seniors. There will be fewer workers.
