(APRIL 17, 2025) Starting May 7, 2025, people in the U.S. will need a REAL ID (or a passport) to get on a plane for domestic travel. This is a new rule from the TSA (Transportation Security Administration). If you are 18 or older, you must have one of these IDs to fly inside the U.S.
In Oregon, many people are rushing to get their REAL ID card before the deadline. DMV offices are very busy. Some people wait for hours without an appointment. It’s easier if you make an appointment online, but appointments are hard to find. The DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) adds new appointments every day, 30 days in advance, so check the DMV website often.
Only about 36% of Oregonians have a REAL ID now. Many others still need to get one. If you are not flying soon, it’s better to wait to apply. But if you plan to fly after May 7 and don’t have a passport, you should get your REAL ID soon.
What is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a special driver’s license or ID card that follows federal rules. It has a star in the top-right corner. It helps keep airports safe. The U.S. government started working on this after the 9/11 attacks.
How to get a REAL ID in Oregon
You can:
Make an appointment online
Go to the DMV without an appointment (but be ready to wait)
You need to bring:
Proof of identity
Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residence
Your birthday
Two papers that show your Oregon address
Your Social Security number
After your visit, the DMV gives you a temporary paper ID, but TSA won’t accept that at the airport. Your REAL ID card will arrive by mail in about three weeks.
The cost is $30 extra (on top of the regular license or ID fee). It is valid for 8 years.
Other IDs TSA will accept
You can still fly with:
A U.S. passport or passport card
A foreign passport
A military ID
A Trusted Traveler card (like Global Entry or SENTRI)
A permanent resident card
A tribal ID (if from a recognized Oregon tribe)
If you already have one of these, you do not need a REAL ID.
Even if you don’t plan to fly now, your plans may change. Think ahead and make sure you have an ID that will work.
