Oregon’s governor wants to close a monkey lab

(APRIL 10, 2025) The governor of Oregon is Tina Kotek. She wants to close a monkey lab in Beaverton. The lab is part of OHSU (Oregon Health & Science University).  

The governor worries about the animals. She wants the scientists to finish their work and close the lab. She says another school did the same thing. Harvard University closed is monkey lab 10 years ago.

Some groups want the lab to close, too. PETA is one example. PETA is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA says the lab hurts animals. It put a big sign near the lab. The sign says “CLOSE OHSU MONKEY LAB.”

Other people say the lab is important. They say scientists are trying to find cures for sicknesses like cancer. They say the scientists are not trying to hurt animals. About 400 people work at the lab. They might lose their jobs.
