(MARCH 27, 2025) The Pew Research Center conducted a survey to learn about religion in large U.S. cities. The study helps show how religion is changing in Oregon and in the U.S. The results of the survey say that Portland and Seattle have the most people who are not religious in the country.
In the Portland-Vancouver area, 44% of adults say they are not religious. This is more than the 42% who say they are Christian. Another 13% follow different religions.
Among the people who are not religious, 10% say they are atheists (they do not believe in god). Another 14% are agnostic (they are not sure if god exists). About 20% say they have no religion.
Oregon is different from most of the U.S. In the whole country, 62% of people say they are Christian. In Oregon, only 43% do. The number of Christians in Oregon has gone down over time. In 2007, 67% of Oregonians were Christian. Now it is much lower.
People in Oregon also do religious things less than in other places. Only 29% of Oregonians pray every day, but 44% of Americans do. Only 20% go to religious services every month, while 33% of Americans do.
Even though fewer Oregonians follow a religion, many still feel spiritual. About 67% say they are spiritual, which is close to the national average of 74%.
