This map, from Oregon Wildfire Risk Explorer, shows green areas of low risk, blue areas of moderate risk, and orange areas of high risk for wildfires.
(JANUARY 10, 2025) In Oregon, people who live in areas with a high risk of wildfires now have new rules to follow. These rules come from special wildfire maps shared by the state. Homeowners must:
Clear trees and plants near their homes.
Use fire-resistant materials like metal roofs.
The goal of the changes is to protect homes from wildfires.
Wildfires in Oregon are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. In 2020, fires destroyed homes, even in places near the ocean that were once considered safe. The new maps show which areas are at the highest risk for wildfires. These areas include about 6% of the state. The maps do not affect home insurance prices.
The rules will be finalized after the state reviews feedback from the public. Landowners in affected areas will get a notice. Other states, like California and Colorado, are also making similar wildfire safety plans.
