(JANUARY 3, 2025) Many people think time on phones and computers makes it difficult for college students to sleep. However, new research from Oregon State University has a different idea. Researchers say something else is more important: loneliness.
The study looked at over 1,000 students. It found that 35% felt very lonely. These students had more trouble sleeping than others. Lonely students were twice as likely to have serious sleep problems.
“Loneliness is a bigger problem for sleep than screen time,” said John Sy. He is one of the researchers.
Using screens for 8–10 hours or more each day also caused sleep problems. But professor Jessee Dietch said, “Not sleeping well is bad for students’ health. It makes stress, anxiety, and school performance worse.”
The study says over 25% of college students have trouble sleeping. This hurts thinking, mood, and health.
Loneliness is a big problem in the U.S. Even before COVID-19, half of adults felt lonely. Lonely people are more likely to feel sad and have health problems.
The researchers say schools should help students feel less lonely.
“Good friendships can help,” said Dietch. Sy added, “Students should limit screen time to 8–10 hours a day, but schools should focus more on reducing loneliness.”
