(NOVEMBER 21, 2024) Amazon wants to use small nuclear reactors to power its data centers in Eastern Oregon. They are called SMRs, or small modular reactors. These centers need a lot of energy, especially as Amazon grows its artificial intelligence (AI) business. SMRs create clean energy without carbon emissions. Amazon hopes to reach its goal of zero carbon emissions by 2040 with this new technology.
SMRs are smaller and safer than regular nuclear reactors. They can make up to 300 megawatts of power. For comparison, a wind turbine makes about 3 megawatts. Solar panels need 10 acres to make 1 megawatt. Amazon is working with Energy Northwest. That's a company in Washington which will plan and test SMRs.
There are some problems. Oregon does not allow new nuclear reactors because there is no federal plan for nuclear waste storage. Some people worry about safety and cost. Past nuclear accidents, like Chernobyl and Fukushima, make people cautious. However, experts say SMRs are much safer because they use advanced materials and are smaller.
Amazon hopes SMRs will be ready by the 2030s. The company is also working on SMR projects in other states. If SMRs work well, they could provide clean energy for Amazon and local communities. For now, Amazon is studying and planning to make sure the technology is safe and effective.
