(OCTOBER 3, 2024) In northeastern Oregon, you’ll find the Wallowa Lake Tramway, the steepest tramway in North America. Built in 1970, this American-made gondola takes passengers from Wallowa Lake Village at 4,450 feet up to the summit of Mt. Howard at 8,150 feet in just 15 minutes. The tram is powered by a 150 horsepower electric motor and travels along a 19,300-foot cable. As you ride, you can enjoy stunning views of Wallowa Lake, the Eagle Cap Wilderness, and even parts of Washington and Idaho.
At the summit, there are many alpine trails for hiking and areas for activities like picnics, weddings, and parasailing. For those who prefer a more relaxing visit, there’s the Summit Grill, where you can enjoy food and drinks while soaking in the breathtaking scenery.
The tramway is open from mid-May to early October, offering visitors a unique way to experience the beauty of Wallowa County.
