OHSU doctors help baby while still inside its mother

(OCTOBER 3, 2024) OHSU is a university. It is also a hospital. OHSU means Oregon Health & Science University.

Doctors at OHSU do something new. They help a baby before it was born. The baby is still inside its mother.

The baby has spina bifada. It is a problem with the spine in babies. The spine does not close.

In the past, doctors waited. The baby was born. Then doctors closed the spine.

Now the doctors don't need to wait. The doctors can help the baby inside the mother.

Doctors say this is better for the baby. The baby has fewer health problems later.
